URP Graduate Recognized with National Award

Wisdom Henry, Urban & Regional Planning Undergraduate and Graduate Alumnus, Selected for the APA’s 2023-24 Outstanding Planning Student Award.

Wisdom Henry, a graduate of the School of Planning, Design and Construction’s (SPDC) Urban and Regional Planning (URP) program, has been named a recipient of the 2023-2024 Outstanding Planning Student Award. The award is conferred by the American Planning Association (APA) to recognize outstanding achievement in the study of planning. Henry received her B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning in 2022 and her Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) in 2023, the latter of which qualified her for the 2023-24 award cycle.

Henry’s research has reflected her interests in inclusivity and equality among marginalized communities. She has delved into issues such as racially discriminatory gerrymandering and voting restrictions. Her work explores how a confluence of economic and political decisions made by local governments contributes to unequal access to municipal services such as clean drinking water and sewage provisions, for African American communities.

Henry says she feels, “A mix of elation, gratitude, and a sense of accomplishment. Knowing that my contributions and dedication to supporting and advocating for marginalized communities are acknowledged within this community [of planning] motivates me to continue striving for a more equitable future.”

To be eligible for the award, students must exhibit excellence in the relevant area of study as well as be enrolled in an academic program accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) during the nominating window. Henry’s scholarly acumen led to her nomination for the award by several URP faculty members including Dr. Noah Durst of SPDC’s URP program.

“To me, this achievement represents not just personal success, but a testament to the supportive community fostered by our esteemed SPDC faculty. The encouragement and guidance I've received from SPDC faculty, specifically from Dr. Noah Durst and Dr. Deyanira Nevarez Martinez have been invaluable, shaping not only my academic journey but also my personal growth. This award serves as a recognition of the collective effort and commitment of everyone involved,” said Henry.

Upon completion of her MURP in the spring of 2023, Henry began work as an Associate Urban Planner for the Village of Orland Park. In this capacity, she shoulders the responsibility of revising existing land use regulations to promote the establishment of a more inclusive urban environment for the Village of Orland Park. Wisdom aspires to produce and promote policies geared toward fostering housing affordability, sustainability, and economic development that prioritizes the needs of marginalized communities.

Henry explained, “The skills and knowledge gained during my time at SPDC have equipped me to navigate my new role as an Associate Urban Planner with confidence. In my role, I aspire to contribute meaningfully and make a positive impact for the communities I serve.”
