West central Michigan apple maturity report – Oct. 3, 2018

Updates on maturity status of Jonagold, Empire, Ambrosia, Mutsu/Crispin, Golden Delicious, Idared, Red Delicious, Rome, Winesap, Fuji and EverCrisp.

General harvest comments

Final pick of Honeycrisp is underway or complete in the area. Growers got after Jonagold extensively in the past week, and are trying to get through this variety as quickly as possible. Empire is now mature, as are many Golden Delicious sites. Red Delicious and Idared still need a week or two. This is a good week to finish stripping Honeycrisp, get through at least first pick of Jonagold if that has not been completed, and get Empires in the bin. Some growers are also in the mature range on Golden Delicious and will be getting after that variety hard by the end of the week or early next week.

Some sooty blotch and flyspeck is observable here and there this year, particularly on light-skinned varieties such as Golden Delicious. It is not widespread. Fruit rots have been surprisingly low given the amount of rain that we had a few weeks back; growers did a good job of addressing that situation. Bitter pit also seems to be low this year.

Color is excellent this year, even Golden Delicious at most sites have a heavy blush on one side. In general, the finish of the crop looks very good and growers feel pleased about fruit quality so far.

The first two brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) were caught in a tower trap in Hart, Michigan, last week, but none were caught this week. We may see a slight uptick in activity with some warmer weather this week, so I will be curious to see if any more show up in the traps when they are checked next week. Most growers have not applied any sprays specifically for BMSB and this pest generally seems to be low enough that it is not an economic threat this year. However, this pest does seem to be increasing in our area, so be on guard next year.

Many growers are also noticing a touch of San Jose scale showing up in many locations that they have not seen it before. It is easily observable at this time of year on fruit, particularly on the calyx end. It is too late to do anything about it this year, but those hot spots should be slated for management next year to prevent the issue from spreading further. This is a great time of year to pinpoint hot spots for this pest based on what shows up in bins. This pest generally seems to be on the rise in the area, so make sure this pest is on the radar as we look at next year’s game plan.

Individual variety results

The scales used to rate these different metrics on these charts are as follows:

  • Background color: scale 1-4; 1 is fully yellow and 4 is fully green.
  • Russet: scale 1-4; 1 is no russet and 4 is severe russet.
  • Pressure: always listed in pounds, and two pressure scores are recorded for each apple tested.
  • Watercore: scale 1-4; 1 is no watercore and 4 is severe watercore.
  • Bleeding: scale 0-4; 0 is no bleeding of red color into flesh and 4 is severe bleeding of red color in to flesh.
  • Red: listed as a percentage of the whole fruit with red color.

Empire was sampled for the fourth and final time this week. Although growers were eager to get after it early last week, that extra week of waiting has paid off—it is now mature and can be picked whenever crews can get to it. Firmness and color are excellent on this variety and size seems to be pretty good. This variety is considered ready for controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at a starch index value of 3.5, and fruits have moved just past that mark. Firmness and brix are looking very good.

Jonagold was sampled for the fourth and final time this week and has taken another jump forward in a week’s time. Growers did well to pick as much of this variety as they did in the past week. It is considered over-mature for CA storage at a starch index value of 5.5 and is not recommended at firmness below 15 pounds. The remaining crop that has not been harvested is creeping towards that range. Color is generally very good on Jonagold this year, and size seems to be pretty good as well.

Ambrosia was sampled for the third time this week. This variety seems to be on the early side of maturity. Background color is a nice yellow, starch index has moved up to a little past three and they are eating very nicely.

Mutsu/Crispin was sampled for the third time this week and is still at least a week or two off from maturity in the region. It barely moved from last week. I am down to one site from the original group of sites that I had since the rest have been harvested already. No blister spot was observed on the samples this week. As per usual for this variety, size is excellent.

Golden Delicious was sampled for the third time this week. Goldens at about half of the sites that were collected this week are on the early side of maturity for CA storage, and the rest were still a bit shy of that mark. It is considered ready for CA storage at a starch index of 3, and generally earlier sites in New Era, Shelby and Hart area have just hit that mark. Some later sites in Oceana County and most sites from Mason County will probably arrive at the same mark by the beginning of next week.

If given the choice between harvesting Empire or Jonagold versus Goldens, go after Empire and Jonagold first since Goldens at all locations sampled this week are either just shy of or just in to maturity. Letting them hang a while longer is not going to hurt. Goldens have a heavy blush this season at many locations due to the quality of coloring weather that we have had.

Red Delicious was sampled for the second time this week. This variety will likely not be ready until at least next week at most locations. It is considered mature for CA storage at a starch index of 2.5 and 16-18 pounds of firmness, and is not considered over-mature until a starch index of 6. Fruits sampled this week are still generally shy of the earliest side of maturity, and growers have other priority varieties this week. Firmness was a little bit low on this variety this week, so we will hope tat we can hold on decent fruit firmness for another couple of weeks.

It is considered mature for CA storage at a starch index value of 3.5 and 14-15 pounds of firmness. Rome was sampled for the second time this week. Fruits sampled from Shelby had moved in to the low end of the acceptable maturity range, but fruits from Benona were still well shy of that mark. It is considered mature for CA storage at a starch index of 3. Most growers have other varieties that take priority right now, so harvest of this variety, even at early sites, is probably a few days out yet. Fruit firmness is excellent on this variety and no color bleeding was observed this week.

Winesap was sampled for the second time this week. It is likely at least another two weeks out from maturity. It is considered mature for CA storage at a starch index value of 2.5, with recommended firmness of 17-19 pounds depending on planned duration of storage. Fruits were a bit on the soft side this week, but at a starch index value of only 1.8 this variety needs some more time.

Fuji was sampled for the first time this week and is at least two weeks away from maturity. It is considered mature at a starch index value of 3 and 16-18 pounds of firmness, depending on planned duration of storage. We are still well shy of that mark. I would like to add at least one more site of Fuji to the program, so any grower who has Fuji that they are interested in having tested is encouraged to contact me about that.

EverCrisp was sampled for the first time at one location this week, and a second location will be added starting next week. This variety is still at least two weeks away from maturity based on this week’s results. This variety seems to be behaving like a Fuji (one of its parents) in starch index value and coloration. Firmness and brix are both extremely high on this variety. These are well documented traits for this apple.
