Volunteer Competency Models

Title:   

Volunteer I   (customize to fit position)

Overall responsibility: 

Perform specific defined tasks in support of MSU Extension programming efforts.    Tasks may be either time limited or expertise based.   Generally this assignment is short term in nature and expectations are well defined and communicated. 

Key competencies expected:

  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Uses effective listening skills when working with a group
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Understands and supports MSU Extension’s efforts in celebrating diversity
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with others
  • Is open to asking for assistance
  • Well organized
  • Effective skill transfer abilities

Responsible to:

MSU staff person or volunteer in charge of the project/program such as:
               Extension Educator
               Project Leader
               Program Instructor
               Program Coordinator
               Volunteer Coordinator 

 Time Commitment:
 
Variable, but generally of short duration or for a specific project or program.   Often a one time commitment of 1-6 hours. 

Qualifications:

  1. Interest in sharing skills or knowledge
  2. Age 21 and up
  3. Willingness and ability to work together and follow MSU policy/procedures as defined by MSU staff
  4. Fulfill job responsibilities without  the expectation of monetary compensation
  5. Willingness to complete the Volunteer Selection Process  (required of all volunteers who work with youth or adults on an ongoing basis)

 

 

 

Title:   

 Volunteer II   (customize to fit position)

 Overall responsibility:  

 Provide a positive image of Michigan State University Extension as they perform duties/tasks/education on behalf of MSU Extension.  Perform specific defined tasks in support of MSU Extension programming efforts.    Assignment may be longer term in nature and involve multiple tasks of an ongoing nature.    Skills required are well defined. 

 Key competencies expected:  

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with adults and/or youth
  • Uses effective listening skills when working with individuals or groups
  • Ability to recognize and use basic conflict management skills
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Understands and supports MSU Extension’s efforts in celebrating diversity
  • Understands and applies basic knowledge on how youth and adults learn
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with others
  • Is open to asking for assistance
  • Well organized
  • Can motivate and encourage participants to learn and/or actively explore
  • Understands and implements MSU fiscal policy when appropriate for the position
  • Provide positive learning or work environment for others
  • Believe in the capabilities of those with whom you interact as part of volunteer assignment
  • Effective teaching/project implementation skills
  • Demonstrates sound judgment regarding the health and safety of others.

 Responsible to: 

MSU staff person in charge of the project/program such as:
              Extension Educator
              Project Leader
              Program Instructor
              Program Coordinator
              Project/Program Leader
              Volunteer Coordinator

 Time Commitment:

 Variable.  Often intermittent assignments of an ongoing nature.   Could be seasonal, monthly, project oriented, or long term commitment of 2-10 hours a month. 

 Qualifications:

  1. Interest in sharing skills or knowledge
  2. Age 21 and up
  3. Willingness and ability to work together and follow MSU policy/procedures as defined by MSU staff
  4. Fulfill job responsibilities without  the expectation of monetary compensation
  5. Interested in providing organizational support to a specific club/project/or series of events
  6. Willingness to complete the Volunteer Selection Process  (required of all volunteers who work with youth or adults on an ongoing basis)

 

 

 

Title:   

 Volunteer III   (customize to fit position)

 Overall responsibility:  

 Provide a positive image of Michigan State University Extension in performance of duties/tasks/education on behalf of MSU Extension.  Perform leadership/coordination role in an area of responsibility in support of MSU Extension programming or project efforts.    Assignment may be longer term in nature and involve multiple tasks of an ongoing nature.    Flexibility in how tasks within the area of responsibility are carried out.

 Key competencies expected:  

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with adults and/or youth
  • Uses effective listening skills when working with individuals or groups
  • Ability to recognize and apply basic conflict management skills
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Sensitive to the unique and diverse needs of different cultural groups in the community(ies)  Celebrates diversity
  • Understands and applies basic knowledge on how youth and adults learn
  • Demonstrates an outstanding  ability to work with others
  • Is open to asking for assistance
  • Knowledge of public relations
  • Ability to collect and assemble data as needed.  Well organized.
  • “Markets” programs within responsibility area
  • Understands and implements MSU fiscal policy when appropriate for the position
  • Demonstrates sound judgment regarding the health and safety of others
  • Provide positive learning or work environment for others
  • Believe in the capabilities of those with whom you interact as part of volunteer assignment
  • Effective in delegating assignments and responsibility to others
  • Working knowledge of the community is essential
  • Understanding of basic evaluation methods and implementation of “satisfaction” or skill building evaluation tools
  • Actively recruits and trains other volunteers
  • Effective motivator

 Responsible to: 

MSU staff person in charge of the project/program such as:
            Extension Educator
            Project Leader
            Program Instructor
            Program Coordinator
            Project/Program Leader
            Volunteer Coordinator 

Time Commitment: 

Variable, but often quite substantial.  Generally a continuing commitment of 4-6 hours a week or more. 

Qualifications: 

  • Interest in sharing skills or knowledge
  • Age 21 and up
  • Willingness and ability to work together and follow MSU policy/procedures as defined by MSU staff
  • Fulfill job responsibilities without  the expectation of monetary compensation
  • Interested in providing organizational on-going support to a specific club/project/program area or series
  • Willingness to complete the Volunteer Selection Process  (required of all MSU Extension volunteers who work with youth or adults on an ongoing basis)
  • Willingness to continue expertise building, attend updates/training to both prepare for the assignment and to effectively carry out the assignment
