Application and Admission

Students can apply for a program at the MSU Office of Study Abroad, 109 International Center, or by mail. Selection of applicants is done on a rolling admission basis - that is, applications are accepted and students are evaluated and admitted throughout the academic year.

We strongly recommend that students apply early - many programs will be filled to capacity by the March 5, 1999 cut-off date.

A $100 application fee is required. Students will receive a bill from the MSU Student Receivables Office for the application fee which is applied to the cost of the program and is non-refundable once a student is admitted into the program. A student who wants to withdraw his or her application is required to notify the Office of Study Abroad, in writing, that he or she no longer intends to participate.

Once admitted into a program, a student will be billed for a non-refundable $200 deposit. This deposit will be posted and due on individual student accounts and must be paid by the due date indicated on the bill. It will be applied to the cost of the program. If a student does not pay the deposit by the due date on the bill, the deposit will accrue monthly late charges until it is paid in full. Additionally, he or she may be dropped from the program. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the Office of Study Abroad, in writing, when he or she is withdrawing from a program.

Students who are unable to pay the deposit by the due date are encouraged to apply for a short-term loan with the MSU Office of Financial Aid.

Do I need a passport or visa?

A valid passport is required for entry into most foreign countries. Some countries may also require a visa. Students are responsible for inquiring about all entry requirements for this program, as well as other countries they plan to visit before or after this program. It is important for students to understand that they may be denied entry into, or be deported from, a country for which they have not obtained the required documentation.

Are there special health issues?

It is strongly recommended that students consult with their personal physician or a travel clinic at least three (3) months prior to their departure. Students need to ensure their routine immunizations are up-to-date; inquire whether there are recommended and/or required immunizations for the country/countries they will visit (including any countries they will visit that are not part of this study abroad program's itinerary); and review educational issues relevant to their personal health and well being.
