I am a PhD student in Dr. Jim Smith’s lab and I am working on resolving Rhagoletis (Diptera: Tephritidae) systematics. The genus Rhagoletis is well-known for having a number of (in)famous members. Because of their specificity to the fruit of a particular host plant, these flies are commercial pests and have become a model system for studying speciation. I am in the process of sequencing several genes from using these aligned sequences to infer a multi-locus phylogeny of Rhagoletis. In addition to systematics and evolution, I am interested in public science education and engagement.
