EmailThis publication summarizes the state and federal limitations on zoning in Michigan. Local governments receive power, including authorization for planning and zoning, from the state. The authority to adopt and enforce zoning is granted to local governments through the zoning enabling acts. When authority is granted to a local government, it often comes with strings attached which may require the task to be done a certain way or within certain limitations. In addition, various court cases, other state statutes and the federal code often limit what local governments can do with zoning.
