This report provides an assessment of the Grand Rapids market for local and regional meat. The authors present demographics of the region and the meat processing facilities that are available. A survey of local area buyers was conducted to better understand the market that they are operating in and some of their perceptions on consumer demand and influence, the pricing and the supply of meat to meet the demand. The report concludes that Grand Rapids is well suited to support a local meat system. While price is an issue, the survey suggested that there are enough consumers interested to support a local meat system in the area. Challenges with supply of the meat to meet demand need to be overcome.
