WIFI Calling Feature

August 16, 2023 <duynslag@msu.edu>

Recently I have received requests from a few people indicating they can’t use their mobile phones in their labs as their phones are not receiving a strong enough connection with their cellular provider’s towers (no bars).  Sometimes this happens in the basements of buildings here on campus or other locations.

I wanted to ensure that people know about Wifi Calling that allows most mobile phone users to use the local WIFI network to place and receive calls and send and receive text messages.

  1. You will need to register your smartphone with MSU wifi to use that at MSU.

Connect with MSU wifi by joining MSU NET 3.0, or MSU 5Ghz.  See link below:

https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/registering-your-device-on-the-network-dhcp

After connecting: Open a browser and ensure you can access the internet

If you encounter issues with your phone requiring registration again or frequently after registerining it look at this article:

https://dhcp.msu.edu/help/randommac.html  accessible only from MSU’s networks.

2. To set up wifi calling on your smartphone, with some providers it requires that you are connected to their network before you even turn the feature on.
