Meeting Minutes
May 15, 2006

The regular meeting of the Van Buren County 4-H Leaders Association was called to order by President, Denise Massey at 7:05 pm with all officers present and fourteen clubs represented.

The secretary report was read.   Motion by Jerri Pursley to approve with second by Margie Godines to accept the report.  Motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was presented with receipts of $2253.00, disbursements of $2250.00 and a total in the checking account of $13102.12, savings balance of $653.55, Teen club balance of $616.51, Moyle Memorial CD of $1000.00.  Motion by Jerri Pursley, second by Melva DeVries to accept the treasurer’s report.  Motion carried.

Bills / Correspondence: Melva DeVries requested the $25.00 in the budget for the Spring Goat Show. 

Club Sharing: Hartford Trailblazers – horse show will be held June 24th.  They had a concession stand at a horse ride between Hartford and made over $100.00.  They reported a nice ride.  Young Explorers – They will have a stress management class on Monday, and writing an article about horses in “Growing Up In Horses”.  John Eastman will be working on the White House lawn for two months.  Porter Busy Fingers – held a camping day at the fairgrounds.  The weather was great, the members who attended had a great time.  They also upgraded and cleaned up the “picnic area” on the campgrounds.  West Valley Livestock – held their trash pick up day along the highway. 

Committee Reports: None.

4-H Agent / County Extension Director Report: Janice attended the Spring Conference and received two awards.  She will also be starting an after school program.

Unfinished Business: Bea Funk Memorial – Nancy Whaley paid the money she owed before the deadline.  Sally Stuby was consulted and this is an internal matter.  Nancy was consulted and was present for this meeting.  Sally Stuby discussed the values of being a leader and offered her thoughts.  Nancy Whaley explained her thoughts and actions.  Sally’s advice is that the Leaders Association has received payment and Nancy is not allowed to handle 4-H funds.  Their was lots of discussion.  Nancy apologized for her actions. Motion was made by Tod Kubiszak to accept Nancy’s payment as received.  Second by Mary Darling.  Seven yes / eight no / 4 abstained.  Motion denied.  Much discussion followed.  Motion by Jerri Pursley to accept payment as received.  Second by Vicki Sue Hickmott.  Motion carried.  Motion by Melva DeVries, second by Connie Hollis to discontinue criminal charges.  Motion carried.  Motion by Denise Massey, second by Venus Ignacek to recommend that Michigan State University revoke Nancy Whaley’s key leader status and allow her to remain as a project leader.  Motion carried.  Teen Club Money – Money has been received.  No further issues.  Fashion Revue – Those who participated reported a fun time.  The participants were wonderful.  There are pictures on the web page.  Exploration Days – Thirty youth and four chaperones have signed up so far.  Chaperone fees will not be paid for by the Leaders Association.  Exploration Days balance is due May 16, 2006.  Leaders Booth – Denise Massey has a schedule where clubs can sign-up for two hour blocks.  Clubs can conduct fund-raisers during their scheduled times.  Margie Godines will bring warmers and sample candles for everyone to promote the upcoming candle sales.  Motion by Terri Karasch, second by Chris Egly for Margie to purchase candles for this purpose.  Motion carried.  Pre-entry Fair Forms – were available at the meeting.  Contact the Extension Office if you need more of them.  Member / Leader Reports – These will be used for fair passes.  Please review your report and bring to the June business meeting.  CWF (Citizenship Washington Focus) – The National deadline may be moved to August 2006.  More information when available.  Cloverbud Activities – If you know of someone that is interested in helping with county clover bud activities, please contact Janice.
 

New Business: Back to School – School supplies will be collected on August 12, 2006.  They are looking for 4-H club members to drive around designated areas to pick up the supplies people will leave by their mailboxes.  Booth Judges – Cards will be in the next newsletter.  Judging will be held on Monday of fair week.  Cougars on the Move – Please be careful.  They have been spotted in Van Buren County.   

 Fair Board Update: Fair books are here!  Pick them up at the Extension Office if you have not picked them up tonight.  Exhibitor tags are available for 5 cents for six.  The fair board is working on sidewalks.  Two new stoves and a refrigerator were purchased for the kitchen area.  Mowing and weeding help is needed.  Contact the fair office if you would like to help.

Announcements: Next meeting is June 19, 2006 at the Van Buren Youth Fair Grounds.  Horse Council event for Jimmy Hollis is August 5 - 6, 2006 at the fair grounds.  This will include a horse show, demonstrations, dance and dinner. 

Adjournment: Motion by Melva DeVries, second by Terri Karasch to adjourn the meeting.   Meeting adjourned at 9:11 pm.
