Michigan Better Kid Care
Workshop Series October 2009/March 2010 Health and Safety- One of the most important responsibilities of a child care provider is keeping children healthy and safe. This workshop will address home safety, hand washing, cleaning and sanitation, responding to emergencies, lead, radon and more. Planning for Professional Development-Professional Development is an important part of any career path. This workshop will address the importance of professional development for early childhood professionals and how to develop a professional development plan. Setting the Stage: Activities to Promote Social Emotional Health-This workshop will discuss ways to promote social emotional health in child care settings and describe activities child care providers can do to improve social emotional health in child care settings. Parents and Providers as Partners-No matter how busy we are as providers, parents still want us to listen to them as they are as important as their children. This workshop will address positive communication strategies; help with understanding conflict and anger and how to engage parents as partners. Nutrition-Healthy Snacks-Snacks are a very important part of the day for children. They help to fill hungry tummies and also add in nutrients that may be missed at meal time. This workshop will address the importance of snacks and how to create snacks that use the Food Guide.

The sessions will feature education on the recommended procedures for preserving food and step by step demonstrations featuring the fruits or vegetables that are available in each month. Participants will learn about necessary equipment, safe handling of food, tried and true procedures, safety issues and practical tips and techniques. Following are the session dates and planned topics: September 23, 2009 9am-12pm Canning fruits-peaches and others October 7, 2009 2pm-5pm Apple Products and Fall Vegetables All sessions will take place at the Human Services Building Kitchen, 801 Hazen Street, Paw Paw. Registration is required for each session at least one week before the scheduled session and seating is limited so pre-registration is required. Each participant will receive recipes and "starter kits" as supplies are available. Participants may register by calling Diana, Extension Educator, at the MSU Extension office in Paw Paw at 269-657-8213. **************************************************************************** Food Service/Safety Certification Training When: October 21 & 28 Where: Human Services Building 801 Hazen Street Paw Paw MI Time: 9am-6pm New laws passed in Michigan require food service establishments to employ certified food managers who must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of food concepts and principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP). The MSUE ServSafe training provides food workers with the training, knowledge and preparation needed to take the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. Successfully passing the exam is required for certification. This course is designed to give the manager or operator a working knowledge of the changes to the state code as well as the principles and practices currently available for proper food sanitation and the application of HAACP. All participants will receive training from ServSafe certified instructors. Each 16-hour class is split into two sessions. Participants will need to attend both sessions, complete the national examination, and achieve a score of 75 percent or above to become certified. The exam is offered at the end of the second day of training. Those taking it will need to have their photo identification with them.
