Michigan Grape Society

Southwest Michigan has almost 500 grape growers who farm almost 12,000 acres of grapes.

The Michigan Grape Society is a grower organization representing grape growers, processors and wineries in Southwest Michigan. This organization sponsors several education programs during the year, including Southwest Michigan Horticulture Days at Lake Michigan College and the annual Viticulture Day at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center.

Southwest Michigan Horticulture Days

Trade Show at SW Hort Days

This two day trade and educational show is coordinated by Michigan State University Extension and sponsored by The Michigan Grape Society, The Michigan State Horticulture Society and The Southwest Michigan Growers. The meeting is in early February. This year’s Horticulture Days will be at Lake Michigan Community College's Mendel Center. For a program check the January newsletter above. The Wednesday morning session generally focuses on general farm topics. It is followed by concurrent afternoon sessions for fruit and vegetable growers. Thursday features concurrent sessions for grape and tree fruit growers during both the morning and afternoon. Admission, which includes lunch on both days, is $25 per person. Viticulture Day

Growers Examining Different Grape Training Systems

The Viticulture Day at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center is an annual open house that focuses on grapes. Viticulture Days in generally held the last Wednesday in July. Check the July newsletter above for program and registration information. Tours of grape research plots allow grape growers to examine different cultural techniques and look at grape varieties and varieties clones. MSU researcher and extension personnel also discuss their current projects. A trade show is included with a vineyard sprayer demonstration. This open house also includes lunch, dinner and a tasting of Michigan and other regional wines.
