September 5, 2023

The “Secure Pork Supply” (SPS) Continuity of Business plan is designed to provide opportunities for swine farmers to voluntarily prepare for a foreign animal disease outbreak before it happens. Topics such as a Premise Identification Number (PIN), biosecurity planning, and enhanced biosecurity measures are essential steps towards preparedness in the event of a disease outbreak.

What is SPS? The “Secure Pork Supply” (SPS) Continuity of Business plan is designed to provide opportunities for swine farmers to voluntarily prepare for a foreign animal disease outbreak before it happens. If Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), or African Swine Fever (ASF) is found in livestock in the United States, regulatory officials will limit the movement of animals and animal products to control the spread of these diseases to quickly eradicate it. None of these diseases pose a public health risk or any food safety concerns and are not found in the U.S. Meat market currently. Pork farmers who have voluntarily prepared a secure pork supply plan and are prepared to implement enhanced biosecurity plans will be positioned to move pigs so that normal operations can be maintained. The secure pork supply plan will help farmers: Protect the health of their animals using enhanced biosecurity practices. Move healthy animals to processing or another location or site under a movement permit issued by regulatory officials. And, maintain business continuity for the entire swine industry, including farmers, haulers, and packers during an outbreak. How will the US respond to a FAD (foreign animal diseases) outbreak? Regulatory agencies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will respond by
topping the spread of disease and eradicating any sick or suspect animals. If an outbreak occurs, the index site will be identified and depopulated, a control area will be set up and movement restrictions will be put in place for any farms that are in the control area. These restrictions will remain in place until the threat of disease spread is diminished. The SPS plan for continuity of business provides ways for farmers to prepare and request movement permits in the case of a stop movement order. How can farmers voluntarily participate in SPS? Get a Premise Identification Number (PIN). Visit the Secure Pork Supply website. Develop an SPS Plan using the materials available on the SPS website. For more information, please email the following address.
