Growing Degree Days @ Peach Ridge from 1st Green tissue:    Base 42 = 1077      Base 50 = 609

Growth Stage for McIntosh:          1 inch

Apple Pests
Oblique Banded Leafroller
Most larvae are getting large and pupae can be found. Some reports of small overwintering larvae still showing up. These may be delayed in their development particularly if B.t. was applied. Adults have been flying for about a week. Expect adult flight to continue and trap numbers will rise. Biofix at first adult flight and look ahead to 400 to 450 DD43 for first hatch – approximately 6/23 with first sprays on around 7/4.
Apple Maggot
None reported.  Expect we might see 1st trap catches from abandoned blocks in the next 7 to 14 days. Trap catches from commercial sprayed blocks will be delayed.
Codling Moth
Egg hatch began about a week ago – we are probably at peak egg hatch right now. Adult flight is just past peak and trap numbers should start to decline. Few eggs are typically laid with evening temps below 62 degrees, but egg-laying increases when night temps get above 70 degrees.
Plum Curculio
Normal to low numbers of adult egg laying scars. We are most likely past peak damage timing. Continue to monitor for egg laying – it should taper off.
Red Banded Leafroller
4th instar larvae can be found in normal numbers. Expect next generation adults to emerge at anytime in the next week or so.
Spotted Tentiform Leafminer
Tissue feeders are present. Mines are found in normal numbers for this time of year. Tissue feeding larvae to pupate at anytime. The next flight of adults will probably be caught this week.
European Red Mite
Populations appear to be low in number for most of the Grand Rapids area. Continue to monitor hot spots in blocks that traditionally have ERM problems.
Rosy Apple Aphids & Green Apple Aphid
Colonies can be found in commercial blocks. Continue to monitor for their presence. Be aware of predators that may help control populations.
White Apple Leafhopper
Adults are starting to be seen in light to normal numbers. No new nymphs yet. Continue to monitor for stippling damage to leaves.
Potato Leafhoppers
Adults continue to be found in very light numbers. 1 instar nymphs are starting to show up. Southerly-based storms can rain them down here. PLH feeds near the edges of leaves possibly causing the leaves to curl downwards (hopper burn).
Eye-Spotted Bud Moth
Adults continue to fly. Expect first larvae at any time.
Tufted Apple Bud Moth
Adults continue to be caught. Expect first larvae at any time.
Apple Rust Mite
Normal numbers present for this time of year. Monitoring in blocks that have had problems with Rust Mites in the past.
Dogwood Borer
Larvae and pupae can be found in the burr knots of M9 rootstocks in problem blocks. No adult flight reported. Expect adult flight at anytime. Traps should be placed soon for first adult moth flight. You may catch Lesser Peach Tree Borer in Dogwood Borer traps .
Tarnished Plant Bug
Nymphs and adults are active in light to normal numbers. Finding in stone fruits, apples and strawberries. Monitor for fruit damage. Feeding damage in apple should end at anytime. They are usually most abundant in orchards with high broadleaf weed numbers.

Stone Fruit Pests
Green Peach Aphid
Present in normal numbers. Monitor for their presence and population growth.
American Plum Borer
Adults are flying. Control sprays should be going on. Control sprays are usually applied in early June with other borer sprays.
Lesser & Greater Peach Tree Borer
Adults are present and being trapped. Expect trap catches to level off and decline..
Cherry Fruit Fly
None reported. Expect 1st flies to show up soon. Set traps for monitoring.
Black Cherry Aphid
Just starting to show up. Monitor blocks for problem populations.
Oriental Fruit Moth
Flagging of terminals continues to be seen in light to normal amounts. Monitor for damage to shoots. You may see fruit feeding damage on small peach fruits also especially if a leaf is touching a cluster of fruits.

Beneficial Insects
Ladybird Beetles – adults and larvae can easily found in many orchards.
Yellow Predator Mites - Zetzellia mali and Agistemus are present.
Lacewings - found feeding on aphids and scales.
Syrphid Fly larvae – can be found feeding on aphids

Continue to look for predators and consider their effectiveness when choosing control programs for problem pests.

Insect Report June 1, 1999

Growing Degree Days @ Peach Ridge from 1st Green tissue:    Base 42 = 895      Base 50 = 485
Growth Stage for McIntosh:          15 mm

Apple Pests
Oblique Banded Leafroller
Various sizes can be found, but most are getting large. Pupae can be found. Mating disruption dispensers should be in blocks ASAP.
Expect that next generation adults will probably be trapped in the next 7 to 10 days.
Apple Maggot
None reported.  Expect we might see 1st trap catches from abandoned blocks in the next 14 to 21 days. Trap catches from commercial sprayed blocks will be delayed.
Codling Moth
Egg hatch predicted for early this week (6/2 – 6/5) based on biofixing on 5/14 – 5/17. This timing is for 3% egg hatch and coincides with peak adult flight. Few eggs are typically laid with evening temps below 62 degrees, but egg-laying increases when night temps get above 70 degrees.
Plum Curculio
Reports of adult egg laying scars in the Grand Rapids area were seen last week. Normal to low numbers. Continue to monitor for egg laying.
Red Banded Leafroller
3rd and 4th instar larvae can be found. Larvae will continue to develop and gain size. Expect next generation adults to emerge mid-June.
Spotted Tentiform Leafminer
Trap catches have declined. Tissue feeders are present. Mines are found in normal numbers for this time of year. Expect tissue feeding larvae to pupate next week and the next flight of adults will probably be caught in the next 10 days to 2 weeks.
European Red Mite
Hatch continues. Adults can be found and will start laying eggs. Numbers can be high in the hot spots. Look for newly hatched nymphs and adults in the folded leaves – especially on water sprouts in the center of the trees. Monitor for early bronzing.
Rosy Apple Aphids & Green Apple Aphid
Colonies can be found in commercial blocks and they are spreading. Continue to monitor for their presence. Be aware of predators that may help control populations.
White Apple Leafhopper
1st through 4th instar nymphs can be found in light to normal numbers. Continue to monitor for stippling damage to leaves. Adult stage should be reached within the next week.
Potato Leafhoppers
Reports of adults being seen in very light numbers. They travel up from overwintering sites in the southern US on thunderheads. They arrive here as adults. Southerly-based storms can rain them down here. PLH feeds near the edges of leaves possibly causing the leaves to curl downwards (hopper burn).
Eye-Spotted Bud Moth
First adults are being caught. Expect adult emergence to continue.
Tufted Apple Bud Moth
Adults just starting to be caught. Expect trap catches to increase.
Apple Rust Mite
Normal numbers present for this time of year. Monitoring in blocks that have had problems with Rust Mites in the past.
Dogwood Borer
Larvae can be found in the burr knots of M9 rootstocks in problem blocks. No adult flight reported. Expect adult flight at anytime. Traps should be placed soon for first adult moth flight. You may catch Lesser Peach Tree Borer in Dogwood Borer traps – the lures are similar.
Tarnished Plant Bug
Nymphs and adults are active in normal numbers. Finding in stone fruits, apples and strawberries. Monitor for fruit damage. Feeding damage in apple should end at anytime. They are usually most abundant in orchards with high broadleaf weed numbers.
