ONLINE National Diabetes Prevention Program - Fridays

What: The National Diabetes Prevention Program is designed to bring an evidence-based lifestyle change program for preventing type 2 diabetes. It is based on research led by the National Institutes of Health and supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Coaches will provide support, encouragement, and information to participants and work through challenges that may arise providing an environment that encourages self-management for the participant’s health and well-being.
Why: People with prediabetes are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke. The lifestyle change program proves that making modest behavior changes, such as improving food choices and increasing physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week, results in participants losing 5% to 7% of their body weight. These lifestyle changes reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% in people at high risk for diabetes.
Who: To be eligible, participants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be overweight (Body Mass Index ≥25; ≥23 if Asian)
- Not be pregnant
- Have no previous diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes
AND must be at risk for prediabetes or diagnosed with prediabetes through ONE of the following criteria:
- Have a blood test result in the prediabetes range within the past year:
- Hemoglobin A1C: 5.7–6.4% or
- Fasting plasma glucose: 100–125 mg/dL or
- Two-hour plasma glucose (after a 75 gm glucose load): 140–199 mg/dL or
- Have a previous clinical diagnosis of gestational diabetes
- Be at-risk for diabetes. Take the test to find if you're at risk.
When: An information session will be provided on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 9 a.m. (EST). Sessions will begin on Friday, September 11, 2020 at 9 a.m. (EST) and repeat weekly for 16 weeks and then monthly for 6 months. As a participant, you will work with a certified lifestyle coach in an online, group setting to adopt healthy lifestyles including healthy eating, physical activity, and sharing information to assist you with your goal to decrease and prevent your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Cost: The workshop is free. The program is supported financially by Michigan State University Extension.
Supplies (optional): The following items are useful when participating in this program: bathroom scale, measuring cups and spoons, and food scale. These supplies are not required, but help with tracking your progress.
