This annual community event is to be held at Gladwin High School on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Doors open at 5:15pm. Admission is free to the public. Local vendors will be available to provide information about environmental and community products. Throughout the evening, there will be free tree seedlings, bulbs, posters and nursery catalogs (while supplies last) and door prizes.

The program will begin at 6:00. Our speaker is Peter Carrington, Curator of the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden, MSU will be speaking about “Edible and Toxic Plants from the Landscape and the Wild.”

Peter is Canadian, but he grew up in the Saint Joseph, Michigan area along the coast of Lake Michigan where he was, when very young, an insect collector and entomology student. Peter went to high school in East Grand Rapids, Michigan and college at Michigan State University, where he dropped out of entomology and began a 30-year career as a biological/medical illustrator. He taught edible and toxic plants and Wilderness Survival Techniques for 36 years at Lansing Community College. Peter joined the staff of the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden as assistant curator in 2007 and graduated with my Ph.D. in 2015, becoming curator in 2017. He is the edible and toxic plant resource person and specialize in teaching toxic plants of animals. Peter’s book on toxic plants of animals, written for zookeepers will be at press in early 2019.
