Registration fee is $65 per person and includes light morning refreshments, lunch, educational program, and tour. Participation is limited to 75 people. Registration ends on December 12, or when the event reaches capacity.

Parking

Please park in Lot 54, which is located south of the Plant & Soil Sciences Building, 1066 Bogue Street, East Lansing. You do not have to pay parking meters or pay-by-plate machines, since these spaces will not be enforced on this day. However, do not park in designated MSU vehicle spaces or you will be ticketed.

Itinerary

8:30 am:  Registration Opens

9:15 am:  Welcoming remarks and workshop overview (Erik Runkle and Roberto Lopez, MSU; Dan McMahon, Philips; Nathan Jahnke, Ball Hort.)

9:30 am:  Light concepts, principles, and terms for horticulture (Erik Runkle, MSU)

9:45 am: Photoperiodic lighting to regulate flowering (Roberto Lopez, MSU) 

10:05 am: Indoor sole-source lighting of seedlings and leafy greens (Erik Runkle, MSU)

10:30 am: Indoor lighting of tissue culture propagules (Nathan Jahnke, Ball Hort.)

10:45 am:  Break with light refreshments

11:05 am:  Supplemental greenhouse lighting (Roberto Lopez, MSU)

11:45 am:  Using LEDs to decrease PGR use (Nathan Jahnke, Ball Hort.)

12:00 pm:  Lighting approaches: Selection of fixtures, lighting plans, and other application considerations (Dan McMahon, Philips)

12:20 pm:  Boxed lunch

1:00 pm:  Tour of horticultural lighting research projects and facilities at MSU – 7 stops, 5 groups:

  • Indoor lighting of leafy greens and culinary herbs
  • High-wire vegetable crop inter-lighting
  • Supplemental lighting of young plants
  • Photoperiodic lighting (specialty cut flowers, tropicals, and foliage)
  • Environmental strategies to enhance strawberry flavor
  • UV lighting for height control
  • Low-intensity lighting for downy mildew prevention

2:45 pm:  Workshop concludes
