Title
Managing Forests in a Changing World
Description
Forest management is in the spotlight. In 2021, the IPCC called for capturing and storing excess carbon dioxide alongside deep fossil fuel cuts. Governments and companies are turning to forests, which absorb over 7 billion metric tonnes of CO₂ annually and provide habitat, resources, and cleaner air and water. But disturbances—wildfires, pests, storms—release carbon, raising concerns about forests as a stable carbon sink. Managing forests for carbon can also conflict with other benefits they provide. This seminar, drawing on research from the Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program, asks: how can we manage forests in a changing world to sustain these services?
