Title

Economic Tradeoffs in Timber Products Under Various Carbon Management Strategies for Maryland and Pennsylvania

Description

This study aims to quantify the monetary tradeoff between forest management for carbon and harvested wood products. For this, we convert the carbon outputs resulting from the CBM-CFS models under various forest management scenarios into timber product outputs to estimate and quantify the tradeoffs of carbon and timber products. Our results indicate that for carbon management scenarios like extended rotation or no harvest to yield higher NPV compared to business-as-usual scenario, market price of carbon needs to be higher than what it is at present (at least $15 per ton of CO2 equivalent assuming all unharvested timber volume is enrolled in carbon program).

Speakers

  • Raju Pokharel, Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry, Michigan State University
    • Dr. Raju Pokharel is an Assistant Professor of Forest Resource Economics in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University. He earned his Ph.D. in forest resources from Mississippi State University, MS, and BS in Environmental Sciences from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. His research focuses on forest product supply chain and market models, feedstock availability, resource utilization, and forest carbon. His current work includes evaluating and developing market opportunities for mass timber, bioenergy, and biochar and assessing the economic tradeoff of timber products under carbon management strategies.
  • Shivan GC, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Forestry, Michigan State University
    • Shivan Gc is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University pursuing a dual degree in forest economics and environment science and policy program. Her research interests include forest products industry supply chain, economic analysis of forest-based industries, and biomass and bioenergy.
