MSU Tollgate Farm Summer Camp Programs 2019

Eight weeks of summer camp themes for ages 6 - 19 run June 24 - Aug. 23, 2019. 
Camps are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.*
$ 310 - $ 350 per week**

Every day at camp is an exciting adventure with a different theme. A typical day will include making nutritious snacks in Garden Kitchen, caring for our farm animals, sowing seeds in the garden, engaging in a creative week-long STEM project, and investigating the natural world of field, forest, and pond. Low child-to-adult ratios make camp weeks fill quickly, so register early. 

MSU Extension Tollgate Farm Camps are a program of Michigan 4-H Youth Development
4-H enrollment at 4-H Online is required for your child to attend MSU Tollgate Farm Camp.

Step 1: Go to 4-H Online to register your child(ren) as Oakland County 4-H members.

When asked for your 4-H county, always enter Oakland. 
Step 2: Receive your confirmation email from 4-H Online indicating your 'primary enrollment club.' 
Step 3: Register and pay for your child for Tollgate camp using your primary enrollment club as your verification password.
If camper is already enrolled as a 4-H member for the current program year (Sept. 1, 2018 - Aug. 31, 2019), check your confirmation email or call the 4-H office for the verification password.

*Aftercare is offered from 4 - 6 p.m. for $10.00 per hour. 
Preregistration for camp and aftercare required.

June 24 - 28 - Green Science Adventure Farm Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend a week on the farm? Our flagship farm camp offers a great taste of farm life. Campers gain a deeper sense of environmental stewardship as they spend their days feeding critters in the barnyard, tracking animals in the forest, playing cooperative games, designing and building STEM projects, and preparing garden fresh snacks they help grow. 

New This Year! June 24 - 28 - Level 1 Horse Camp: Equine Science
Ages 9 - 14
Geared toward the scientist, this version of level 1 Horse Camp will explore the wonders of the equine body! Campers will dive into the anatomy and physiology of horses, explore specimens under a microscope, learn about veterinary procedures, and much more! Campers will also work on basic horsemanship skills, acquire horse husbandry knowledge, and experience the day-to-day operations of a working farm! You do not need a horse to participate. 

 July 8 - 12 - Red Planet Survival Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Mission control, do you copy? Spaceship Spartan 1 has crash-landed on Planet Tollgate and the crew must find a way to survive until help arrives. Young astronauts attending this camp will test their survival skills with fire building, archery, fishing, wilderness first aid, shelter building, orienteering, garden kitchen, animal chores, and more! Our interstellar-based adventures will encourage campers to engineer their way through survival situations and learn about our solar system.

 New This Year! July 8 - 12 - Advanced Outdoor Adventure Survival Camp
Ages 12 - 14
Take Survival Camp to a whole new level and challenge yourself with new and exciting skill building experiences. Test your limits and develop a survival mindset with map reading and orienteering, fire building, outdoor cooking, shelter building, rockclimbing, trust initiatives, an optional Thursday campout under the stars, and other outdoor adventure challenges never before offered at MSU Tollgate.

  New This Year! July 15 - 19 - Wildlife Animal Adventurers Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Investigate animal behavior and how animals in the MSU Tollgate forest, fields, and pond play an important role in their ecosystems. In addition to daily farm animal chores, our adventures take us beyond the barnyard to discover the diverse habitats of wildlife and the creatures who live within. Discoveries, collaboration, and play are in store for this fun-filled animal-focused week!
July 15 - 19 - Tollgate KBS Winged Wonders Traveling Camp 
Ages 10 - 13
Have you ever wondered about the creatures that flap, fly, and float through the air? Tollgate has banded together with Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, Michigan to offer this exploration of wild and domestic birds through interactive, hands-on science activities. Become an ornithologist to study birds and their amazing feats as we hike the fields and forests of MSU Tollgate Farm and KBS. Meet at Tollgate for farm-based birding adventures Monday and Friday. As field scientists, camp out under the stars at KBS Tuesday through Thursday to interact with research scientists, meet raptors up close and personal, make new friends, and have lots of fun! Transportation and tents provided. 

New This Year! July 22 - 26 - Time Travelers Farm Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Explore MSU Tollgate through the ages as you try your hand at homesteading skills of farmers from the past, the present, and…the future! Tackle farm-based skills of gardening, animal husbandry, carpentry, cooking and canning, candle-dipping, fiber processing and arts, composting, and companion planting. Try your hand at cart-pulling, harvesting, and plowing. Put technology to use and look into the future as you investigate sustainable agriculture themes of resource management and environmentally friendly practices.

 New This Year! July 22 - 26 - Level 1 Horse Camp: Colonial-style
Ages 9 - 14 

 Take a trip with us to colonial America when horsepower meant actual horses! Discover how horses were used before farms had trucks and tractors, and even practice skills like plowing and driving! Experience life before modern-day technology. Campers will also work on basic horsemanship skills, acquire horse husbandry knowledge, and experience the day-to-day operations of a working farm!
You do not need a horse to participate.

July 29 - August 2 - Eco-Warriors Camp
Ages 6 - 12 

Eco-Warriors is perfect for those who like to tinker, engineer, craft, and change the way we think about trash! The week will include calculating our eco footprint, exploring pros and cons of renewable energy, repurposing items in our makerspace, and taking a field trip to the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority. Learn from the MSU Sustainable Agriculture Team about closing the food waste loop, prepare, and eat locally grown snacks, and consider the impact of our resource use in agriculture. 

 New This Year! July 29 - August 2 - Eco-Challenge Camp
Ages 12-14

Are you interested in engineering, science, biology, nature, and fun? At Eco-Challenge Camp youth are exposed to the use of new technology to investigate natural science phenomena. Campers will incorporate engineering practices to build and test exciting products together. Through this, participants will gain an understanding of how scientists tackle real-world problems and research questions through the scientific method.

August 5 - 9 - Splish Splash Water Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Dive into the world of the pond to investigate the animals, bugs, and plants that call it home. This week is perfect for the camper who is interested in fishing, canoeing, and pond dipping for macroinvertebrates. Learn about water conservation and water ecology. What happens to the rain that falls on MSU Tollgate Farm? How do the plants and animals impact our water? We will close our week with the return of our famous water slide for a splish-splashing good time!  

New This Year! August 5 - 9 - Level 2 Horse Camp: English Riding
Ages 9 - 14

A camp about English? English-style horseback riding of course! Campers will dive into the world of horse racing, jumping, dressage, and learn about their impact on the world today. Enjoy the horses up close and personal as you gain English riding skills during your equine adventure on the farm. Campers will expand their horse husbandry knowledge and experience the day-to-day operations of a working farm! You do not need a horse to participate. You must have attended a MSU Tollgate Level 1 Horse Camp in order to register for Level 2 Horse Camp: English Riding.

 August 12 - 16 Farm Animal Camp
Ages 6 - 12

Animals play many important roles on the farm; they provide food, clothing, hard work, and companionship. Explore animal science as you interact with our horses, sheep, chickens, rabbits, and goats. Spend the week learning about farm animal behavior and how to interact with and care for animals in the MSU Tollgate barns and pastures. 


New This Year! August 12 - 16 Tollgate Junior Vet Science Camp
Ages 12 - 14

Explore the Tollgate barn and pastures as you investigate veterinary science and animal medicine. Collaborate in teams as you participate in various hands-on learning adventures related to the world of farm animals. Participants will gain animal handling experience, learn how to use veterinary tools & technology, practice physical exams, and have the opportunity to explore various animal-related career fields with visiting vets and animal care specialists.
August 19 - 23 - Tollgate Top Chef Food Camp
Ages 6 - 12

 Calling all foodies! Participate alongside other young cooks in Tollgate’s junior top chef food challenge. Our week will include digging into the concept of farm to table, caring for the animals, and exploring the surrounding field, forest, and pond. We will interact with goats and greens as we engage in food science making nutritious snacks that taste yummy, too! We will grow, harvest, and cook with MSU Tollgate farmers each day as we build our sense of food community and fun!

New This Year! August 19 - 23 - Level 2 Horse Camp: Western Riding
Ages 9 - 14

Yeehaw! Let’s take a trip out west to the days of cattle drives, campfires, chuck wagons, and more! Explore the different western events and try your hand at roping, barrel racing, and many other ranch activities. Enjoy the horses up close and personal as you gain Western riding skills during your equine adventure on the farm. Campers will expand their horse husbandry knowledge and experience the day-to-day operations of a working farm! You do not need a horse to participate. You must have attended a MSU Tollgate Level 1 Horse Camp in order to register for Level 2 Horse Camp: Western Riding.
 The Steward and Steward-in-Training (SIT) Program is a progressive Tollgate youth development experience for teens ages 13-19 who are interested in gaining experience working with campers in agriculture and the natural sciences. Stewards-in-Training are 13-14 years of age, serve as role models for campers during activities, and commit to at least one full week of camp. Stewards-in-training pay $200 per week plus an annual $20 4-H membership fee. Stewards are 15-19 years of age and serve as assistants to the educational leaders and mentors for both SITs and campers. Stewards must commit to at least two full weeks of camp.

Cancellation Policy: If cancellation is needed, please be prompt. Cancellations from June 1 through 2 weeks prior to your first day of camp result in a $100 cancellation fee. No refunds 14 or fewer days from first day of your camp week.
