The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources community to attend the ODEI First Tuesday Event.
The April event features Dr. Shakara Tyler, a returning generation farmer, educator and activist-scholar who engages in agroecology, food sovereignty and climate justice as a practice of abolition and decolonization.
First Tuesdays
These monthly discussions are open to all though are geared toward graduate student concerns.
First Tuesday events are an opportunity to hear from diverse scholars and professionals from the agriculture and natural resources industry, government and higher education disciplines speak about their own career and life paths, as well as their research, work or opportunities in a variety of fields.

Background on Dr. Shakara Tyler
Dr. Shakara Tyler is a returning generation farmer, educator and activist-scholar who engages in agroecology, food sovereignty and climate justice as a practice of abolition and decolonization. She obtained her doctorate degree at Michigan State University in the Department of Community Sustainability (CSUS) and works closely with Black farming communities in Michigan and the Mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania, Maryland), formerly through the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems.
Tyler also serves as board president at the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and as a board member of the Detroit People’s Food Co-op.
The CANR Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offers First Tuesdays events as an opportunity for MSU graduate students, faculty, visiting scholars, guest speakers and peers to interact outside of the classroom. Guest speakers include diverse scholars and professionals from the agriculture and natural resources industry, government and higher education disciplines.
