Jan. 31, 2022 - Daedre McGrath - MSU Horticultural Trial Gardens Manager                                                              "Breeding Breakthroughs - Game Changers in the Annual Garden"                                                                           Hundreds of new varieties of annual are released onto the horticulture market each year.  New varieties generally have a short lifespan and are either forgotten about or replaced by improved varieties within a couple years.  However, every so often a variety is developed that is truly game-changing.  Horticulturist and MSU Trial Gardens Manager, Daedre McGrath will explore what makes a new variety stand out from the pack and also stand the test of time.

"Pollinator Gardens on a Grand Scale"
Join MSU Ecologist Dr. Doug Landis to learn how he developed and maintains his large-scale pollinator planting at his Michigan home. Focusing on ecological restoration, the planting mirrors what a historical prairie may have looked like in Ingham County circa 1800. Michigan genotypes of native plants are centric to his design and provide an oasis for beneficial critters big and small.

Living in a deer paradise for more than 20 years, MSU Professor of Horticulture Dr. Tom Fernandez has seen his share of damage to cultivated woody and perennial plants.  He often speaks in the “size of the herd” not an individual or two.  Learn how Fernandez evaluates and ranks hundreds of plants to get a “leg up” on specimens that are more resistant to damage.

"Cappiello's Baker's Dozen - Awesome Trees!"
Join nationally-known Yew Dell Botanical Gardens Executive Director in looking at a dozen trees with big impact.  Keeping in mind wide adaptability and cool features, Cappiello will illuminate some shining stars for your garden. 

Re-certified MSU Extension Master Gardener and Trainee attendees will earn 1.0 continuing education hour for each session attended or viewed via recording.
