Teaching teens to cook and choose healthier foods empowers them to make behavior changes that persist into adulthood. Teens can become positive role models, encouraging friends and family members to shop for and prepare healthy foods.

MSU Extension nutrition and physical activity programs provide participants with tips and tricks to include healthy choices into any lifestyle and budget. Teen Cuisine- Northern MI and other MSU Extension nutrition and physical activity programs are funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. Both programs aim to reach limited resource audiences, who are eligible for one or more of the following programs: Free/reduced school lunch; Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation (FDPIR), Head Start, SNAP Bridge Card/EBT, WIC, and other assistance programs. We aim to have at least half of every class qualify by income.

Registration is intended for Michigan residents. Extension services are available in every state, and we encourage you to reach out to your local network for similar programming.

These courses will all be held virtually, utilizing Zoom. You will receive additional information for Zoom before the program begins. 

We encourage you to attend all 6 sessions. You must attend at least 4 sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

Teen Cuisine helps teens become self-sufficient in the kitchen while teaching them healthy habits that will last a lifetime. 

Over the course of six lessons, teens will:

  • Practicing recipe reading, ingredient measuring, healthy goal setting and proper hand washing
  • Recognizing unhealthy snacks that are high in added sugars, saturated fat and sodium
  • Identifying beneficial exercises to promote overall health
  • Know more about preventing food-borne illnesses with safe food handling

There is no cost for this class, but you must preregister.
