What is Winter Hike

January 18, 2020 12:00PM - 2:30PM SOLD OUT!

This program is SOLD OUT!

The landscape at Hidden Lake Gardens is simply stunning in winter offering spectacular views and an unmatched sense of solitude.  Join Jon Genereaux as your guide for a unique winter hike perspective.  During the 2.5 hour trek through the forest, we will discuss adaptations of trees and plants and their dormancy, animal hibernation, migration, identification of tracks in the snow, and the many clever ways in which living things survive in winter.

Please wear waterproof boots and clothing appropriate for cold and wet weather conditions.  Trekking poles, ski poles, or hiking sticks may be helpful for maintaining balanced footing on snow covered hilly terrain.  We will be trekking into the deeper parts of the forest and will often go "off trail."  That being said, there some risks.  All the perils that come with an ordinary hike are amplified in winter, from difficult uneven terrain, to cold and ice, to slippery steep environments.  Not suitable for children under 8 years old.

A warming fire, light snacks, and hot beverages will be served out in the forest with views not seen by many (if hiking conditions are reasonable).  The HLG forests, though they look to be sleeping in winter, are not!  Winter forests are quiet, wonderful places for a hike offering different sensations now than at other times of the year.  Snow will crunch under your feet and crisp air will pink your cheeks, so get off of the couch and keep cabin fever at bay by heading to Hidden Lake Gardens to discover...WHAT IS WINTER?!

Cost:  $15 per person / $13 for Friends of HLG.  Space is limited, registration is required.  Please call 517-4531-2060 to register.
