Professional Short Course  

Understanding Forest Carbon Management is an intensive, online short course designed to provide a robust introduction to the benefits of forest land management specific to carbon while offering clear action paths. Topic areas include carbon cycle and storage science, domestic and international policy overview, project case studies, management considerations, measurement basics, and available tools and support.

This course is offered by the Michigan State University Department of Forestry Forest Carbon and Climate Program (FCCP) in partnership with the USDA Forest Service’s Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) and the USDA Northern Forest Climate Hub (USDA Hub).

Registration and Enrollment

Registration is currently open for the course periods beginning March 15th, July 15th, and November 15th, 2020. Registration is open at our MSU Department of Forestry official storefront. You will receive communication from an online education specialist within 1-3 business days of your course purchase. The course will be offered throughout the year according to this schedule: 

  • Course period 1: March 15 - June 15
  • Course period 2: July 15 - October 15 
  • Course period 3: November 15 - February 15 

Students must complete the course within their selected course period in order to receive a formal Certificate of Completion from MSU Department of Forestry. Students are eligible for a full course refund if requested within 14 days barring that a significant amount of the course has not been accessed. 

Informational Session 

FCCP Program Director, Lauren Cooper, hosted an informational webinar on the short course in June 2019. This session included a quick overview of the FCCP, the short course, the online learning environment, a preview of course content, and how to register and enroll.
