The Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky (CEDIK) and the Department of Landscape Architecture (UKLA) invite applications from landscape architects and urban design professionals to join their community design team as an Extension Specialist in a three-year grant-funded position. The person hired for the position will work closely with other members of the CEDIK team including faculty and staff in Landscape Architecture, Community and Leadership Development, and Agricultural Economics. The work of the landscape architecture extension specialist will focus on community design, landscape architecture, and urban design. CEDIK works closely with community organizations on projects that enhance the built environment and public space including streetscapes, trail systems/greenways, parks, walkability, and wayfinding, among others. The extension specialist will work directly with communities on design and planning projects but will also be involved in training for extension agents and community members related to environmental design issues, and in building awareness of the capacity for design to improve public life. This individual will also gather and analyze data from CEDIK/UKLA’s research team to support community design studies and development of training materials.

CEDIK and UKLA are seeking a colleague who has robust design ability, visual representation skills, and the capacity to incorporate analytical research into design process. The successful candidate will have the desire and ability to inclusively work with diverse groups of citizens and to cooperatively participate on design teams that may include faculty, staff, and students from multiple disciplines.

CEDIK is an interdisciplinary unit within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment at the University of Kentucky with faculty and staff from multiple departments. CEDIK develops and delivers a variety of programs related to community economic development as a part of the University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Service. An Extension Professor in Landscape Architecture is a member of CEDIK and will work closely with the new Extension Specialist. The College of Agriculture, Food and Environment has strengths in environmental science, community development, economics, and other areas that are complementary to the work of CEDIK.
