Landscape Services Arborist Student Intern
This position will assist in a wide variety of tasks associated with the field of Urban Forestry and Arboriculture. Duties would include assisting with the installation of tree protection fencing; root trenching and other tree protection methods prior to construction; basic pruning of campus trees; root crown excavation with an Air Spade; instruction in basic rope and saddle tree climbing; assist in identifying and treating plant and tree disease, insect, and other related problems; Assist with removal of dead, diseased, or dangerous trees. Update and maintain MSU's maintenance database using ArcGis Collector Application; operate and perform regular maintenance to light and medium-weight vehicles, such as daily oil checks, grease fittings, and tire pressure checks; transport supplies, materials, tools, and equipment to work sites using university vehicles; issue, receive, and store supplies and equipment; assist in monitoring working areas to assure compliance with safety precautions and proper work methods; ability to send/receive emails. This position will engage in High Performance, leading edge practices, which are Innovative in their approach to increased Stewardship and Service Excellence.
Working knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance; wear protective footwear requested such as a leather work boot; applicant must have a good driving record and submit their operators license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check; ability to work in variable weather conditions to include severe weather; frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds with occasional lifting over 75 pounds; knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations and the ability to use internet and email.
Experience in grounds maintenance; experience wit ArcGIS Collector Application; experience and knowledge of Infrastructure, Planning and Facilities and/or facilities structure, process, and procedures; possession of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator; ability to demonstrate T-shaped competencies.
