About the Department

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources is part of NC State University’s College of Natural Resources and is one of the oldest and largest departments of its kind in the nation. We are home to over 90 full time faculty and staff, more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. We are based in Raleigh, North Carolina and our activities include teaching, research, and extension.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, professional-track, faculty position in forestry with emphasis on forest management (silviculture) and non-industrial private forestry. This appointment is at the assistant professor level and is 100% Extension.

The successful applicant will be a part of the department’s 10-person Extension Forestry team of 4 faculty and 6 staff. This position is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, but requires travel throughout North Carolina.  The successful applicant will provide leadership in designing, implementing, and evaluating public educational programs consistent with the philosophy, policy, and overall educational objectives of North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and delivering educational programming to diverse audiences, including stakeholders from different socio-demographic groups and with varied background knowledge of forest management.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing an innovative, state-wide extension program in forest stewardship with emphasis on active forest management by non-industrial private forest landowners consistent with the philosophy, policy, and overall educational objectives of North Carolina Cooperative Extension and NC State University
  • Determining educational needs and impact by assessing and evaluating educational programs and services on a regular basis
  • Performing applied research that is in line with their Extension programs
  • Seeking external funding that expands the impact of their Extension programs
  • Providing current research-based information to county Extension personnel, landowners, state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, natural resource professionals and others by employing various teaching methods and formats tailored to diverse audiences
  • Cultivating and developing inclusive and equitable working relationships with county Extension personnel, forest landowners, natural resource professionals, faculty, staff and others 
  • Obtaining/maintaining status as a North Carolina Registered Forester
  • Obtaining/maintaining valid NC driver’s license. Frequent travel throughout the state connected with official duties is required.
  • Working necessary hours to fulfill job responsibilities, including some evenings and weekends
  • Actively taking part in service to the department, college, Cooperative Extension, university, and profession

Minimum Education and Experience

A Ph.D. in forestry or related discipline with specialization in silviculture, wildlife conservation, or climate resiliency. 

Candidates who have completed all requirements for the PhD except their dissertation (ABD) are also eligible to apply, but the degree must be awarded by the start date

  • Basic knowledge of educational technologies and their appropriate use in the development and delivery of educational programs
  •  Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, work, teach and interact with diverse populations, including stakeholders from different socio-demographic groups and with varied background knowledge of forest management
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct applied research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to secure external funding in support of the land grant mission
  • Demonstrated ability to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach and evaluate educational and outreach programs
  • Knowledge and experience planning, conducting, and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs
  • Education or training in wildlife management through forest stewardship
  • Education or training in climate resiliency (risk mitigation and adaptation to a changing climate) 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise student or volunteer participation in applied research and extension
  • Expertise in wildlife conservation and climate resiliency
