The Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University is seeking applicants for an annual (12- month) appointment, tenure-track position in Equine Reproduction at the Assistant Professor level with an appointment of 40% Extension, 35% Teaching, 20% Research, 5% Service. The successful candidate will lead MSU Extension faculty and educators to develop educational programming including workshops for breeders and veterinary professionals. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching mission of the department which will include developing an undergraduate level equine reproduction course and an applied equine reproductive technologies course that is integrated with the MSU Arabian herd’s breeding and foaling season. In addition, the successful candidate will mentor students in special topics and research projects related to equine reproduction. Scholarly research in equine reproduction is expected including publication in peer-reviewed journals. The candidate will be expected to generate extramural funding in support of their extension and research programs.
Candidates must possess a PhD in animal science, zoology or closely related field, or a DVM with research experience, and practical expertise in equine reproductive biology. Demonstrated experience in teaching and extension/outreach and/or related industry experience is desired. A successful candidate must be able to instruct and demonstrate techniques in all aspects of equine reproduction required for both live cover and artificial insemination. Candidates must be able to handle and collect stallions and evaluate and prepare semen for breeding or transfer. Candidates must be able to demonstrate modern breeding techniques for the mare and have a working knowledge of managing an equine breeding program. The successful candidate will develop a research program in the area of their expertise that can successfully secure external funding and provide research experiences for students. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be able to lead and work within teams of animal scientists, extension educators, and industry stakeholders with various disciplinary foci.

The successful candidate filling this position will join a diverse group of over 45 Animal Science faculty that support over 500 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, as well as interdisciplinary faculty in the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Program. The Department of Animal Science supports an adult and youth equine extension specialist who collaborate with faculty from across the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and field educators as well as colleagues in other institutions throughout the nation. The MSU Extension Equine Team works closely with stakeholder groups, including the Michigan Horse Council and various youth, breed and equestrian discipline organizations throughout the state, to offer both traditional and online educational programs and resources.
Michigan has the twelfth largest horse population in the U.S. with thriving competition and recreation sectors. The horse industry adds a total value of $1.6 billion annually to the Michigan economy and directly provides jobs for 22,000 workers. The MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center offers a program like few others in the U.S., in that students can develop the knowledge and skills required at every stage of the equine life cycle, from breeding, training, and marketing. In addition, the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Facility provides a premier location for instruction, with a fully equipped media classroom, a newly renovated breeding barn, and the recent addition of a farrier program.
