Key Responsibilities

The bioinformatics and data sciences lead will be responsible to drive internal genomics and bioinformatics initiatives for Ball Helix, and to provide support to all business units of Ball Horticultural Company. In addition, the selected candidate will lead in employee training, technical support, presenting at meetings, and support of research projects.

Essential Functions

  1. Lead data science strategy as well as staff management to achieve both department and corporate research goals.
  2. Develop bioinformatics pipeline(s), statistical analysis, data modeling, and internal research software.
  3. Analyze a wide range of data including high throughput sequencing (e.g. Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) and phenotyping data to support internal molecular marker development goals.
  4. Secures partnerships and third-party external vendors to access high throughput omics-based technologies.
  5. Collaborate with other Ball team members and assist in development of experimental designs to guarantee high quality scientific results.
  6. Develops and executes standard operating procedures to ensure consistent and reproducible data analyses.
  7. Leads priority projects to ensure timely delivery of expected project outputs.
  8. Provides and champions data analysis leadership and data driven initiatives across multi-disciplinary teams throughout Ball.

Requirements

  1. Minimum of MS degree with 5+ years’ post masters experience; PhD with a minimum 2 years of post-doc experience in plant genomics and bioinformatics.
  2. Understanding of key concepts in quantitative genetics is required.
  3. 4+ years’ experience in data analysis, data management or data warehousing in an industry setting is also required.
  4. Experience in Python and R (statistics, bioinformatics, data visualization) is a must have.
  5. Experience in genomics (e.g., high throughput sequencing) assisted breeding of ornamental crops is highly desired.
  6. 2+ years’ experience designing and querying relational databases is preferred.
  7. Experience using cloud computing platforms (Microsoft Azure or AWS) is a plus.
  8. Experience working with software containerization (Docker, Singularity, Kubernetes) is strongly desired.
  9. Possesses essential interpersonal skills to be an effective, collaborative team member.
