Director of Gardens and Glasshouses

Job Description:

Holden Forests & Gardens is one of Northeast Ohio’s largest and most important cultural and environmental institutions. It comprises two campuses, the urban Cleveland Botanical Garden campus in Cleveland’s University Circle and the rural Holden Arboretum campus in Kirtland, and is the 12th largest public garden in the US.

We are seeking a Director of Gardens and Glasshouses to oversee the maintenance and care of the gardens, grounds, and glasshouses at the Garden campus. The Garden is a 10-acre urban environment that includes extensive outdoor plant displays and two indoor glasshouses which feature examples of forest and desert biomes (www.cbgarden.org). The Director will supervise a team of horticulturists, interns, and volunteers that support the horticulture program. This position works closely with the Education, Events, and Operations departments ensuring that the organization’s featured exhibits and events are supplied with the appropriate plants and care to accurately reflect the theme. The Director will report directly to the Vice President of Horticulture for Holden Forests& Gardens.

Other primary responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to maintaining and further developing our signature campus collections (gardens, grounds, and glasshouses) to reflect the high standards expected for regional and national recognition, collaborating with staff across both campuses to create and implement annual and long-term collections plans, and continuing to use sustainable horticulture practices. The Director is expected to represent Holden Forests & Gardens at local and national meetings, lead tours, and serve as a spokesperson to diverse public and professional audiences regarding horticulture activities at the Cleveland Botanical Garden campus.

 To Apply:

Interested applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in public horticulture, landscape horticulture, or a related field; however a Master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate will also have a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience in landscaping and garden maintenance. Previous work experience in public horticultural gardens is a plus. We will begin reviewing applications on June 15, 2018. While a start date is flexible, we are expecting to fill the position by August of 2018.  Applicants should apply online https://workforcenow.adp.com/mascsr/default/mdf/recruitment/recruitment.html?cid=db704977-d8c5-4be2-a36a-23f4002eddc0&jobId=42221&lang=en_US&source=CC3&ccId=19000101_000001.
