Greenhouse Manager - West Lafayette - Botany & Plant Pathology(Job Number:1801298)

Under the direction of the Department Heads of the Botany and Plant Pathology and the Agronomy departments, the Lilly Hall Greenhouse Manager is in charge of all aspects of the greenhouse growing process for specific crops/product lines. This person will manage and operate a 55,000+ sq. ft. greenhouse complex, associated head house and growth chamber facility that serves two colleges and at least five departments.

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Comprehending and coordinating the diverse agricultural research needs of agronomists, plant scientists, engineers, and other researchers, all with complex research programs that may have overlapping or conflicting priorities  
  • Responsible for the proper care of the greenhouse, including the principles and practices of plant cultivation, propagation, and crop protection
  • Participating in information gathering from customers and allocating greenhouse bench space on a semi-annual basis
  • Collaborating with the Controlled Environment Plant Facility (CEPF) manager to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and provide high-quality, pest- and disease-free plant material to the phenotyping facility
  • Documenting greenhouse utilization and tracking issues and their resolution
  • Supervising a greenhouse plant coordinator (BTNY) and a maintenance/facilities coordinator (AGRY)
  • Coordinating, hiring and supervising temporary student workers for daily watering, fertilization and maintenance needs
  • Developing user protocols and training materials
  • Conducting regular training sessions and workshops for new users
  • Coordinating and hosting facility tours and engaging the public and students in plant research and education
  • Ordering supplies and materials for greenhouse operations
  • Working with department business offices to ensure correct billing and recharge system implementation
  • Liaise with AgIT or ITaP to facilitate automation and data collection and digital information flow from facility to user laboratories
  • Responding to alarms and alerts after business hours and work with building deputy/zones/facilities to ensure normal operations at night and weekends
  • Helping customers/clients identify future needs and assist in fulfilling those needs
  • Seeking funding and establishing development plans to enhance the existing facility as a showcase for plant biology
  • Coordinating with existing staff on operations and oversight of CoA growth chambers
  • Assisting department heads and college leadership in strategic planning efforts that benefit the Lilly Greenhouse facilities


  • Master's degree in plant or agricultural science or related field
  • Two years' experience in research, greenhouse facilities management or other related plant science experience
  • High level of motivation and initiative to solve problems, assume responsibility, meet deadlines, and accomplish objectives of a cross-disciplinary research facility 
  • Strong technical aptitude that can be applied to agricultural machinery as well as data collection equipment and sensors that result in large amounts of sophisticated data
  • Clear understanding of research design and project management 
  • Ability to life and carry 10 to 25 lbs
