The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia invites applicants for the position of Greenhouse Manager. The Greenhouse Manager oversees all aspects of the research, teaching and outreach operations conducted in the 6000 sq. ft. of greenhouse facilities maintained by the Department of Biology. These facilities are used by faculty, staff and students year round and depend on the plant growth support services and expertise provided by the Manager. Responsibilities include operation a complex of greenhouses and affiliated spaces, playing a major role in planning, personnel management, and the development of policies to ensure effective and efficient operations. The Greenhouse Manager will develop, maintain and administer operational budgets while working with faculty, students and staff to monitor facility operations and work with Facilities Management. The incumbent will provide support for plant growth, including recommendations and application of fertilizers and pest management, in addition to keeping up to date with new advances in technology and the application of that technology within greenhouse and growth chamber operations. The Greenhouse manager will need to make independent decisions that improve the quality of projects conducted across plant growth facilities. The Greenhouse Manager must be capable of establishing strong working relationships with administration, faculty, students, and staff to ensure effective communication among all parties.
Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Horticulture, Floriculture, or a closely related field of Plant Biology is required. Must be safety oriented and know, understand, and adhere to and train others to conform to all safety requirements and regulations. Must have the ability to work under pressure, solve multiple problems /or previous work experience in a greenhouse environment is required. The Greenhouse Manager must have the ability to coordinate multiple tasks, all with effective prioritization. Attention to detail is a must. Preference will be given to individuals with prior supervisory and personnel management experience and with demonstrated ability to anticipate, perceive, diagnose, prioritize, and remedy problems which make improvements to systems, services, and/or processes in the facility. Prior experience with environmental control systems and current or prior certification in the use and application of pesticides and herbicides is preferred. Demonstrated prior ability to use on-line ordering and database record keeping is a plus.
