Compensation: $14.00-16.00/hour (depending on experience) and housing*

The Overstory Crew Lead will help carry out research on the effects of silvicultural treatments on the ecology of managed forests as part of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE). The primary duties of this position will be to conduct overstory surveys and help lead other overstory crew members. Additional duties will include ensuring safety protocols are followed, ensuring data quality, helping with project logistics and communicating with the HEE Field Supervisor and Project Coordinator. The HEE Overstory Crew Lead may also be asked to assist with other HEE projects from time to time including salamander, beetle, and moth surveys. Field work will be conducted at Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests near Martinsville, IN and Bloomington, IN (respectively).

Qualifications:

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in forestry, botany, wildlife management, or other related natural resources field

• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

• Willingness to work in extreme conditions, including traversing rugged terrain through dense, thorny shrubs and working in high temperatures and high humidity

• Strong tree and shrub identification skills

• Experience with forest tree measurements Preferred

• Experience leading a field-based sampling crew

• Experience with hand-held GPS units, maps, and compass

• First Aid/CPR certification Each work week will generally consist of five 8-hour days.

The final hire is contingent upon clearance of this background check. *Bunkhouse/camp style field housing is provided. Residents will be required to pay a $300 refundable security deposit prior to beginning work in addition to a $20 non-refundable cleaning fee. Residents will also be required to help with regular cleaning and general upkeep of the facility.
