Nematode Assay

  • Survey our operations’ growing areas for nematode populations and document results with a camera equipped stereoscopic 400 power microscope.
  • Recommend corrective action for carrot, cucurbit, celery, herb, corn and other fresh market produce.
    Beneficial species will be selected from commercial vendors and applied to growing areas with boom sprayer.
  • Document beneficial species samples with microscope. Survey and report on success of establishing
    populations with this action
  • Monitor and document populations over summer growing season. Monitor and document crops for nematode damage.
  • Perform field and harvest work on subject crops bringing outstanding vegetables to our customers.
  • Research and suggest IPM program for nematocidal cover crop and OMRI nematicide as alternate to
    beneficial nematode inoculation.
  • The successful Technician may return in 2021 to survey overwintering success of beneficial nematode species and continue a successful IPM program and vegetable production.

Insect Assay

  • Monitor and document insect populations and crop damage over summer growing season.
  • Assist with selection and application of OMRI insecticides in our IPM program.
  • Perform manual removal and destruction of insect pests like Colorado potato beetle, tomato hornworm or
    others during population explosions. Manual control is part of a flexible IPM program.
  • Perform field and harvest work on subject crops bringing outstanding vegetables to our customers.
  • Assist with manual removal of vegetable culls from field and packing shed. Technician will assist with
    composting this vegetable waste in a manner that does not harbor drosophila species.

Cover Crop Installation

  • Technician will assist with cover crop planting and maintenance between crop rows and on approximately 12 acres of unplanted, old farmland.

La Casa Verde Produce is a small grower of fresh market produce, flowers and pork for our Farmer’s Markets in
Leelanau County and Traverse City Michigan. We attend six markets weekly during the summer season. We have 3 acres in production on La Casa Verde, the Home Farm. We have 17 tillable acres on a 40-acre property, The North Farm, 1 ½ miles away; 5 will be in production for 2020. We are Organic Certified by MOSA, and are MAEAP Verified. Bachelor level technicians will be paid $12.00/hr for the summer season (enrolled or graduate of baccalaureate agricultural program). Master level technicians will be paid $15.00/hr for the summer season (enrolled or graduate of Masters agricultural program). Housing provided in the farmhouse at the North Farm. La Casa Verde Produce is growing, the right candidate will find opportunity for continued full time seasonal employment and, in time, full time supervisor and managerial employment.
