Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary position. To work as a laborer in a wide variety of routine manual labor areas.

Unit Position Summary

This position will assist or lead other staff in a wide variety of routine manual labor tasks related to general landscape, plant and tree care, preservation, and treatment and grounds maintenance operations; mow lawns and landscaped areas; collect and dispose of debris; cut weeds, brush, and grass using hand and power equipment; perform landscape installations including plant material, signs, site furniture, edging, and boulders; shovel, rake, grade, dig, spread, back-fill, haul materials using appropriate implements; seed and sod lawn areas; assist in the transplanting and moving of trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant material; assist in identifying and treating plant disease, insect, and other related problems; apply herbicides and pesticides to landscape beds and lawns; operate small and large power equipment used in landscape maintenance and construction including truck/trailer combinations for transporting heavy equipment; operate loaders, tool cats, tractors, and various implements; assist with hoisting and loading operations with power-driven equipment; assist with installation of irrigation systems; operate and perform regular maintenance to light and medium-weight vehicles, such as daily oil checks, grease fittings, and tire pressure checks; transport supplies, materials, tools, and equipment to work sites using university vehicle; issue, receive, and store supplies and equipment; maintain and install erosion control devices; assist with placement and installation of tree protection fencing and with plant protection methods; maintain roads and walkways; participate in MSU's campus football tailgate clean up; shovel snow, apply sand and brine, de-ice walkways; operate snow-removal vehicles and equipment; assist in monitoring working areas to assure compliance with safety precautions and proper work methods; ability to send/receive emails; update and maintain MSU's plant maintenance database using ArcGis Collector Application; Position location: Landscape Services.

This position is expected to work 40 hours per week from April - November at $17.76-$18.69 per hour and provides additional benefits, with the possibility of working November - April.

NON-STANDARD/VARIABLE WORK HOURS:6am-2:30pm, Monday through Friday and may require significant after-hours, weekend, and holiday work. This position will require overtime and varied schedule shifts from 5pm-1:30am, 6am-2:30pm or others depending on seasonality of work requirements or emergency situations such a s snow removal, parking ramp maintenance, football cleanup or other special events.

Desired Qualifications

Applicant must have a good driving record, be able to pass the departmental motor vehicle background check and submit their operators license number on their application form; be able to pass university criminal background check; wear requested safety footwear such as a leather work boot; possess or attain a MSU forklift operator's permit within 3 months of hire date; Possess or attain a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in categories Turf(3A), Ornamental (3B), a nd Right of Way (6) within 6 months of hire date; Possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license; Ability to frequently lift over 75 pounds; ability to drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.

May require valid operator, chauffeur, or commercial driver's license(s) with applicable endorsements and medical certificate in order to comply with State of Michigan requirements.

This position requires, or will require prior to the completion o f the probationary period, knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.

Desired: Background in horticulture/landscape work or strong equivalent background in similar agricultural or construction equipment work; At least 1 year experience performing bed maintenance and installation of landscape construction projects or an approved equivalent; Working knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping; 1-3 years paid experience in commercial snow removal operating a licensed plow vehicle; possession of forklift operator's permit; possess ion of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator; possession of green industry certification; knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations and the ability to use smart phone apps, the Internet and experience with ArcGIS Collector Application; the ability to work in variable weather conditions to include severe weather; frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds with occasional lifting over 75 pounds; ability and willingness to work significant after-hours, weekends and holidays; experience and knowledge of Infrastructure, Planning and Facilities and/or facilities structure, processes, and procedures; ability to demonstrate T-shaped competencies.
