Northport Point is seeking a full-time, Lead Gardener / Horticulturist for our private homeowners’ association in Northport, Michigan, to assist in creating and sustaining a beautiful environment.
We are looking for a motivated career-oriented individual who is passionately interested in the field or has a strong background in Horticulture. The position we are looking to fill has excellent growth potential.
The Lead Horticulturists job is to maintain client gardens as efficiently and thoroughly as possible in the time allowed by clients. This includes deadheading, pruning, trimming, and training plants; hand weeding; fertilizing, amending soil through composting and other means; planting seasonal annuals, containers, & other garden areas as needed; monitoring irrigation, and ensuring client gardens look their best. Clients and your crew look to you to answer questions about plants, and may ask about other issues with their property.
Primary role of this position is to work closely with fellow gardeners to ensure the highest quality garden care for our client’s properties including:
• Weeding and edging flower beds
• Planting, watering, and fertilizing seasonal annuals
• Deadheading and pruning annuals, perennials, and shrubs• Using a back-pack blower to keep lawn and garden areas clean.
• Watering flower beds, annual plantings, hanging baskets, and newly planted trees
• Knowing or learning how to correctly prune hedges and shrubs
• Mulching and composting• Purchasing plants based on client’s expectation
• Purchasing gardening supplies and tools for staff usage
• Cleaning and maintenance of community buildings• Other duties as assigned
A successful Horticulturist will be responsible, punctual, organized, honest, detail- oriented, hardworking, and interested in learning more about horticulture. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: • Working for long periods of time on a variety of surfaces in a variety of environments. • Love of the outdoors • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence • Ability to work both independently and with a team • Strong organizational skills and tracking materials to be billed to homeowners • Strong work ethic, demonstrable ability in prioritization • Current MI driver’s license • Ability to bend and stand frequently while weeding • Using hand tools such as clipper, shovels, and other gardening tools. • Job requires physical stamina associated with many garden tasks, such as plant installations, mulching, weeding, hauling debris in a variety of weather conditions • Ability to lift 25+ pounds Experience: • Candidates should possess strong working knowledge of annual and perennial plant materials utilized in bed plantings and seasonal containers • Container design and installation • Experience working on residential landscapes is preferred • Experience overseeing crews and managing field work
