The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is seeking an experienced Manager of Development and Donor Engagement to develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising and development plan to help the organization achieve its strategic goals.

Reporting to the Executive Director, this role will create and lead an annual fundraising strategy to outline new opportunities for engagement growth across all fundraising channels to increase revenue. The Manager’s focus will emphasize corporate partnerships (sponsorships), special events, virtual fundraising, campaigns, and individual giving.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated fundraising and/or sales and relationship management experience meeting significant revenue targets. They will bring innovation and creativity to attract Millennial, Gen-Y, and Gen-X donors through community giving days, online appeals, peer-to-peer fundraising, and social media.

The incumbent is a self-motivated, confident, and experienced fundraiser with a record of success in planning and executing annual appeals, special campaigns, events, and planned giving programs. Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills are necessary for this position, as well as the ability to multitask, work independently, prioritize, meet deadlines, and achieve results in a team environment.

This position is remote, with occasional travel to Alexandria, VA, as needed. Strong preference is given to candidates in the DC area.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising strategy through direct mail and virtual appeals throughout the year.
  • Drive achievement of revenue goals as outlined in AFE’s Strategic Plan and annual budget.
  • Manage donor cultivation, renewal, solicitation campaigns, monthly giving, donor acquisition, and stewardship.
  • Work with the Executive Director to create a strategy to promote and solicit new members for AFE’s Legacy Circle.
  • Analyze donor data and giving trends to create and execute donor conversion, retention, and upgrade strategies.
  • Master AFE’s donor database, ensure accurate records, run reports, and export data as needed for mailings and fundraising appeals.
  • Oversee gift/donation acknowledgments, edit letters, and ensure gifts are coded for designated or undesignated purposes.
  • Develop an engagement plan with like-minded organizations to support AFE’s activities and cultivate partnerships.
  • Advise and collaborate with the Executive Director, Board members, and staff on current strategies, trends, obstacles, and opportunities in revenue generation and donor relations.
  • Establish and implement short and long-range resource development strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Fundraising/Development Committee (FDC). Create agendas, meeting books, reports, and minutes from FDC Committee meetings. Present donor analytics and fundraising reports at committee and Board meetings.
  • Create and/or revise AFE giving brochures, donation forms, and other fundraising materials as required for annual giving programs and special campaigns. Coordinate production of development materials.
  • Research and write grant applications for additional funding.
  • Assist with planning and execution of virtual and in-person fundraising events and with projects relating to fundraising as outlined in AFE’s Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee regular audits of digital fundraising collateral to ensure content is continually monitored and has the best user experience, as well as consistency, accuracy, and relevance of messaging.
  • Work with the Board to identify their role in contributing to the Endowment’s development and success.
  • Travel to industry events and make donor visits as required (<20% of the time).
  • Write fundraising appeals and awareness articles for internal newsletters and outside trade publications. Work with communications staff to develop ads and graphics as needed.
  • Oversee communications staff on social media fundraising and ad campaigns. Assist with an outreach plan to promote AFE via social media platforms.



Requirements

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • A Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in fundraising, special events, proposal writing, and other resource development.
  • Experience in digital fundraising at a non-profit or marketing agency (rapid response; email marketing; list building; writing and editing; and using data for decision making).
  • Proven record of success in fundraising and developing corporate partnerships that result in exceeding revenue targets. Experienced in annual giving, recurring monthly giving, major gift-giving, and sponsorship solicitation.
  • Analytical skills to track data using a donor database to acquire, recover, retain, and upgrade donors. Experience with Network for Good database is a plus.
  • Experience working with committees and/or Board members is highly desired.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills to initiate and cultivate positive relationships with donors and volunteers.
  • Excellent writing skills. Experience in writing direct mail appeals, e-appeals, writing and editing articles, and developing donation forms and other ways to utilize communications.
  • Hands-on experience and demonstrated success in planning, developing, and delivering successful digital fundraising campaigns and project management. Well-connected in the non-profit world of fundraising and advocacy.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Highly motivated with strong organizational skills, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively both independently and on a team. Deadline-oriented with a high level of confidentiality.
  • Energetic self-starter with outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, follow-through, ambitious performance goals, and proven ability to work effectively under pressure. Excellent judgment and resourcefulness.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Mac, PPT/Keynote, WordPress, Adobe, MailChimp. Advanced experience working with donor/member databases and other communications applications.
  • Experience with required state fundraising registrations and other c3 fundraising compliance.
  • Experience with creating videos, podcasts, or social media fundraising content/ communications is a plus.
