Position Summary

Position description: The School of Packaging at Michigan State University invites applications for a three-quarter time, 9-month academic year, non-tenure track, Academic Specialist position with a 75% outreach, 15% teaching, and 10% service assignment.  Start date is anticipated to be August 16, 2022.

This position will initially work to develop and implement strategies that increase the number of under-represented students in the Packaging program by focusing on three student-centered activities: recruiting, guiding, and advising, and connection with alumni. In addition, this position may also teach packaging classes and/or short courses, give presentations and represent the School of Packaging to various audiences. The School of Packaging is committed to achieving excellence by facilitating and sustaining an accessible and inclusive culture that includes global diversity.


  • Create and implement a School recruitment strategy, including marketing materials and electronic media plan, logistics and coordination of events to reach high school, community college and transfer students. Collaboratively work with and leverage existing MSU and College recruitment programs.
  • Partner with the School of Packaging Alumni Association and the Institute of Packaging Professionals to leverage recruiting content and coordinate efforts across the US

Guide and Advise:

  • Using a metric and data-driven approach, partner with and leverage College and University programs, communities and resources to promote student retention and graduation success
  • Guide and mentor students based on their specific needs to connect with School, College and MSU resources (financial, social, academic), and navigate university policies and procedures


  • Create programs and processes that connect students with Alumni, including partnership with the School of Packaging Alumni Association and the School of Packaging Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • Develop strong relationships across the School, the College and MSU to further develop a sense of community for all students in the School of Packaging

  Other Duties:

  • Work with MSU and College communication partners to publicize Packaging and student success stories on MSU communication platforms
  • Collect and maintain data on programs and initiatives to evaluate and measure impact and help guide future efforts.
  • Serve on School committees
