Undergraduate Research Position

Hiring Organization: MSU Dept of Plant Biology
Employment type: Part-Time
Job Location: East Lansing, MI
Application Deadline: June 30, 2021

We're seeking a part time student employee to join our research group in Plant Biology. We need help for 10-19h per week starting either this summer (ideally) or at the start of the Fall semester extending through at least the end of Spring semester 2022, to plant, grow, and maintain several species of plants (grasses, a legume, and an oilseed crop plant) in our growth rooms and chambers under defined conditions and to measure their growth and photosynthesis rates. We're looking for someone with experience in growing plants under controlled conditions, with demonstrated attention to detail, skills/habits of record keeping, clear spoken and written communication, basic computer software skills (word, powerpoint, excel or equivalent), and collaborative and self-organizing abilities.  Pay through student payroll will be competitive for on-campus and dependent on experience, with increases according to increasing skills and experience. Work will be on campus in the Plant Biology Building, and will require availability on multiple days per week. The person recruited will gain experience and training in physiological measurements and will have the opportunity to participate in research projects and if they wish to develop their own project(s). Depending on the student's personal interest in research, their time availability per week (in the 10-19h/week range) and how long they join our lab for, past undergraduate members of our lab have presented their results at various meetings, and some have been co-authors on published research articles - this is not required or expected, but is available.  Supported in part by the experience, mentoring and training we provide, undergraduate alumni of our group have gone on to careers in horticulturally related professions, to graduate school in the plant sciences, and to biochemical/biomedical technical professions.   If you are interested in hearing more about this opportunity, please send me (Yair Shachar-Hill) an email at yairhill@msu.edu.  Please include a short bio or CV/resume.
