Service on Sense of Place Council

Mark Wyckoff, interim director of the Land Policy Insitute, has served on the State Sense of Place Council and three of their workgroups since fall of 2010. This Council is served by staff of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the Michigan Municipal League and Public Policy Associates. The Council and its workgroups meet monthly and are engaged in an effort to implement a logic model designed to jumpstart placemaking at the local and stakeholder level throughout the state as a major economic development tool designed to attract and retain talent. Activities of this Council have led to the development of a statewide Placemaking Curriculum and the MIplace Partnership Initiative.

In addition, Mary Beth Graebert, LPI Associate Director of Programs and Operations, joined the Creative Placemaking Workgroup of the Council and has been working with this group to develop a creative placemaking curriculum, identify state programs and tools that help/hinder the inclusion of arts and culture in community development, evaluate the economic and social benefits of projects and define strategies to help artists and “creatives” to become leaders in their communities.
