Thursday: MSU Extension Master Gardener Appreciation Day
Join us on Thursday, June 16 for a MSU Extension Master Gardener Appreciation Day. Enjoy a choice of a tour of the MSU 4-H Children’s Garden, a tour of the MSU Herbarium, a one-of-a-kind botanical scavenger hunt at MSU’s W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, or a self-guided tour of MSU’s campus in full bloom. Then join your fellow EMGs for an Appreciation Celebration, followed by dinner at the beautiful MSU Horticulture Gardens. If you plan to attend tours and workshops the following day (June 17), you have the option to reserve a room at the Kellogg Center on campus so you are ready to hop on the tour bus bright and early! * This day is a perfect lead-up to Friday’s activities and a great opportunity to connect with old friends and make new ones. Come prepared for some walking - rain or shine. Tours and scavenger hunt qualify for MSU EMG education hours. Some tours have limited spaces, so register early!
*Rooms are not included in conference registration fee; self-registration required.
This is a day designed to honor our MSU EMGs – fun activities in the afternoon followed by an evening celebration and dinner at the beautiful MSU Horticulture Gardens. Transportation to sites is not provided on this day.
Be part of a team solving clues that will teach you about the history and uses of some of the fascinating plants in MSU’s oldest horticultural garden. There will be prizes awarded for the most correct answers, but the best take-home will be memories of an enjoyable, interactive journey through Beal Garden and its wonderful collection of plantings.
Select from two time slots, 1 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. (two-hour activity).
Join Dr. Norm Lownds, Curator, on a tour of the Michigan 4-H Children's Garden. This garden was established in 1993 and has been recognized as a model for other children’s gardens everywhere. It consists of nearly 100 theme gardens and areas ranging from the ABC Kinder Garden to the Wild Garden with the focus on making connections between kids and plants. This tour will run rain or shine, so plan accordingly.
Limited to 30 attendees.
Take part in a small, guided tour of the MSU Herbarium, housed in the Plant Biology Laboratories Building on the MSU Campus. The Herbarium was established in 1863 and assists researchers at MSU by providing stewardship and access to over 520,000 plant and fungus specimens. Learn about the important role of the MSU Herbarium in understanding how our biodiversity is changing over time and what that means for human civilization and life on earth.
Select from two time slots, 1:30 p.m. or 2:15 p.m. (30-minute activity) Limited to 15 attendees during each time.
