Earth Explorers Camp: Day 3

Beeswax cloths, Footprints, Tomatoes, and Bee Hotels? What an interesting day!

2022 Earth Explorers Camp: Day 3

Fruit Hash & Berry SmoothieIMG_4504

For today's Garden Kitchen recipes, we made a tomato, basil, and strawberry fruit hash. Campers got to chop up the tomatoes, strawberries, and basil, then we mixed it all together and had a taste! It was really, really hot outside today, so our afternoon recipe was a refreshing Berry Smoothie, mixed with bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and spinach! Campers got to give a countdown to pressing the blender button. Each camper gets to go home with recipe cards for each day.

Ducks, and chickens! Today was duck-feeding day, so we took some fresh Dill, from the dill plant patch which sits right in front of the Activity Center. After grabbing that, we made our way over to the duck pen to place our dill into the tiny pool they have. The ducks were very happy to be fed, while the campers pointed out all the different features of what makes a duck a duck! Other groups got to visit the chicken coup to take out some of the eggs, which one group got so many!

Forest TrapsIMG_4495

Yesterday we put down paper and ink traps in our forest to get an idea of what manner of forest creatures reside here. One group got some ink prints, and their paper got torn! We did put some food on the paper to attract some animals, I guess one animal got really excited about the food we put down, and it got so hungry it tore right through the paper!

IMG_4511Beeswax Cling wraps, Hotels, and Pollinator Game

Since this activity dealt with melting beeswax, we had help from our Camp Coordinator to make beeswax cling wraps for each student to take home. It is a good reusable substitute for plastic bags, and plastic wraps. Another activity today was to make "bee hotels" for our buzzing bees. It consisted of hollow sticks and empty metal cans, so the bees can rest inside. The bees do have special hives that live on opposite sides of the farm, so its nice to have a spot in between to rest before moving on.

STEM Maker SpaceIMG_4517

Just like yesterday, we focused on making some fun carnival-style games for our Friday activities! Since yesterday was just a planning stage, today we finally started making the games. Campers too paper, cardboard, straws, and more to start building their games. We will most likely be building these carnival games for the rest of the week. Get ready for some fun times on Friday with these carnival games!
