Title

Forest Sector Carbon Accounting 101: Matching the question with the right framework

Speaker

Edie Sonne Hall, Founder and Principal, Three Trees Consulting

  • Edie has been working on biogenic carbon accounting at all parts of the value chain for over two decades. On the product side, Edie has served on ISO standards committees related to LCAs and the first North American Wood Product Category Rule. At the organizational reporting level, she has participated in the technical working groups for both the Product and Scope 3 standard, as well as the current draft land and removal guidance of the GHG Protocol. And on the forest side, she has commented on numerous offset methodologies, and co-authored a VCS approved, IFM methodology. She chairs the North American Wood Product LCA coordination group, which brings together wood LCA experts, wood building advocates, associations, and academics to better coordinate and efficiently produce wood product LCAs. And finally, she is currently on the Technical Advisory Committee of the UN-EP Life Cycle Initiative Biogenic Carbon Project.

Description

This is a high level “setting the stage” talk to attempt to simplify the headaches people get when trying to understand why there is not a consistent way quantify biogenic carbon impacts. It will give the hard truths about the complexity of biogenic carbon cycle and provide broad guidelines for matching the right framework to the question you are asking, whether it is reporting needs, scenario comparisons, carbon offsets, or policy considerations.
