Blueberry pre-harvest meetings June 28-29, 2016
Two blueberry pre-harvest meetings will take place Tuesday, June 28, in Van Buren County and again Wednesday, June 29, in Ottawa County.
A pair of Michigan State University Extension blueberry pre-harvest meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in Van Buren County and Wednesday, June 29, in Ottawa County. Both meetings will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be eligible for 2 RUP credits. The meetings are free and open to all blueberry growers and consultants. The meetings’ format will be similar except the Tuesday night meeting includes a tour of an herbicide demonstration plot.
The Tuesday, June 28, meeting will be in Breedsville, Michigan, in central Van Buren County at Earl Akehurst’s blueberry planting on County Road 215, just north of the CR 380 intersection in Breedsville. The planting is located on the west side of the road about 200 yards north of the intersection. The CR 215 Bridge south of Breedsville is closed, so growers should plan accordingly. Look for a sign on the west side of the road marking the entrance to the field.
There is an herbicide demonstration plot at this location and the meeting will begin with a viewing of the herbicide treatments and responses with MSU fruit horticulture specialist Eric Hanson. MSU entomologist Rufus Isaacs will discuss insect control during blueberry harvest. MSU Extension educator Carlos Garcia-Salazar will discuss the results of the 2015 farm water quality study, looking at water sources on blueberry farms. MSU plant pathologist Annemiek Schilder will discuss disease control during blueberry harvest.
The Wednesday, June 29, meeting will be in West Olive, Michigan, at the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, 12220 Fillmore Street, West Olive, MI 49460. The agenda for the Ottawa County meetings does not include an herbicide demonstration.
