Bring your tasty tomatoes to the Tomato Taste-off on August 27

Join us in Kalamazoo for a tomato taste-off event. Information and demonstrations will cover various vegetable gardening tips, and advanced master gardeners will be on hand to answer gardening questions.

Tomatoes

Celebrate the flavor of fresh, locally grown produce at the Tomato Taste-off on Saturday, August 27, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Walnut Room of the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services, 3299 Gull Road in Kalamazoo, Mich. Those wishing to participate should bring approximately 20 small tomatoes, four to five large or green tomatoes, or six to eight paste tomatoes from their garden. Whole tomatoes may be registered for competition between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to participate in this competition to help decide which tomatoes have the best flavor.

Also on the program, Master Gardener Bobbe Luce will be demonstrating how to prepare fresh pesto. The "Ask the Expert" booth will have Advanced Master Gardener volunteers on hand to answer vegetable gardening questions. Information about preserving the harvest, saving seeds, ways to gift your harvest, plus identification of common pests and diseases will also be available. Pressure canners will also be tested for safety free of charge.

This event is co-sponsored by the Kalamazoo MSU Extension Master Gardener Program, Kalamazoo in Bloom, and the Kalamazoo Garden Council. For more information, contact Linda Whitlock at 269-383-8815.
