Capacity Building Is a Non-linear Process: Building Networks for Better Research

In line with the project objectives to strengthen the role of research in the policy process and to build needed research capacity, researchers at Michigan State University and several tertiary institutions in Nigeria worked in teams to submit grant proposals for research work in Nigeria under the MSU led Alliance for African Partnership (AAP). The tertiary institutions include University of Ibadan, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Nasarawa State College of Agriculture, Covenant University and Edo State University. The meeting took place on March 17, 2017. It was a first-time experience for some of the Nigerian scholars who contributed to concept development and proposal write up. One of the grant proposals was successful and will receive the sum of $100,000 dollars.
MSU faculty anticipates engaging in such processes with relevant Nigerian faculty teams in the coming months and years where opportunities for collaboration exist. This is important, particularly as dwindling budgetary appropriations in Nigeria have significantly affected budget allocations by government to tertiary and research institutions.
