The Common Bean Disease Workshop hosted by the Agriculture Research Council, Republic of South Africa (ARC- Grain Crops Institute) will focus on combining current knowledge and cutting edge methods for accelerating research progress on key diseases constraining current and future common bean production with emphasis in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The primary focus of the workshop will be on Angular Leaf Spot (ALS) and Root Rots. Keynote speakers will be invited and attendees are encouraged to prepare presentations or posters.

Specific Goals

  • Elucidate host resistance, genomic characterization of resistance genes, and MAS
  • Coordinate development and evaluation of key bean genetic populations
  • Examine protocols for pathogen sampling, isolation, and maintenance of collections
  • Evaluate pathogen diversity
  • Develop international protocols for gene symbols, race designations, and disease rating
  • Formulate regional and international strategic plans to facilitate breeding for improved and sustainable resistance
  • Formulate collaborative research themes to address specific issues of ALS and root rot

Travel and Hotel Arrangements

  • Flights should be reserved to Johannesburg International Airport (JHB) and then connecting to Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit (MQP)
  • Reserve the hotel shuttle for the 90 minute trip from MQP to the Protea Hotel
  • Participants should plan to arrive on or before July 19 and to depart on or after July 24

Sponsorship and Scholarship Fund for Workshop

  • Funding from a consortium of donors is being sought for key scientific expertise and for a scholarship travel fund, but funding from related projects will cover expenses for a majority of participants.
