Current issues affecting Michigan local governments starts new program

A new extension webinar series will discuss timely issues affecting Michigan local governments.

Beginning in January 2017, Michigan State University Extension, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Counties and Michigan Townships Association will be presenting a series of free webinars discussing timely issues related to local governments in Michigan. In the fast paced and ever changing world of government, it can be a challenge for leaders to keep up with things that are happening at other levels of government, or how others are dealing with similar issues they are facing.

These webinars, six times a year, will provide an opportunity for local elected and appointed officials, as well as staff and interested residents, to hear from experts on a variety of timely topics throughout the year, as well as learn about how other local units are addressing similar issues.

The first webinar will feature presentations by Deena Bosworth, from the Michigan Association of Counties, and Judy Allen from the Michigan Townships Association, facilitated by MSU Extension Specialist Eric Walcott. The topic for the first webinar will be “What Happened in Lame Duck?” and the presentation will cover legislation passed during the “Lame Duck” legislative session, and its impact on Michigan local governments.

This first presentation will be Jan. 10, 2017 from 2-3p.m. Registration is now open. Those interested who are unable to participate can register and be sent a recording of the presentation. Participants without internet access will also be able to phone in to listen to the presentations.

Future webinars will cover topics relevant at the time, as well as topics such as Addressing Local Service Needs, Road and Transportation Funding, and Local Government Finance. Presentations will be facilitated by MSU Extension staff and include presentations from experts on each topic.

Registration can be done online, and a link to the webinar will be sent out closer to the date of the webinar. Those with questions should contact MSU Extension Specialist Eric Walcott.
