The School of Public health has some amazing professors and resources concerned with interdisciplinary learning and I’ve been trying to take advantage of as much of it as possible! Since I’ve started, I’ve switched from the human nutrition cohort into the Environmental Quality and Health cohort, on a mission bridge the food-environment intersection! I am really loving my environmental chemistry course and my community health courses.
One of my projects currently is doing a community needs assessment and I chose to evaluate Lansing food access initiatives and outreach programs. I’m also planning on attaining a certificate in Industrial Ecology from the School of Natural Resources.
Other than school, I’ve been spending time volunteering for Project Healthy Schools and teaching 6th graders about nutrition and food culture every week! I’ve also been working at Zingerman’s Deli and helping out with their Planet Zing team on projects to reduce the carbon footprint within their food system!
Last week, I was nominated as a candidate for the Dow Sustainability Fellowship at U-M! This fellowship is highly competitive and for full time grad students who are committed to finding interdisciplinary, actionable, and meaningful sustainability solutions on local-to-global scales. Fellows are nominated from a variety of grad programs in the university and 40 are chosen to become fellows. The fellows then get to attend group seminars, engage with leaders in sustainability and draft team projects (with funding) that address key issues in sustainability.
