Disaster loan program for Michigan fruit growers

Learn about requirements for low interest loans and crop insurance at an informational meeting October 18.

The Berrien County MSU Extension office is hosting an informational meeting for fruit growers regarding low interest loan opportunities and crop insurance programs. This meeting will be on October 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center near Benton Harbor, Mich. (view map and directions).

The 2012 Michigan Agriculture Disaster Loan Program will offer affected producers the opportunity to apply for a low-interest loan (1 percent), repayment period five years (see note below). The deadline for crop insurance for all fruit crops is November 20. Learn how you may qualify for loan programs and crop insurance and what financial documentation and information is required for each.

  • Get examples of the documentation and forms needed for disaster loans and crop insurance and learn how to prepare them correctly.
  • Learn about crop insurance, what’s available and how to apply.
  • Learn the basics of the FSA Emergency Loan Program.

There is no charge for this meeting, but please RSVP to Jamie at the Berrien County MSU Extension office by October 16 (styburs1@anr.msu.edu or 269-944-4126) so we know how many people plan to attend.

Note: The Michigan Ag Disaster Loan Program funding is first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested in using this funding, you will want to contact your lender right away. With the freeze and drought this past summer, these loans could get snapped up very quickly.
